Fingerless gloves: beat the chill with this easy pattern!
These fingerless gloves will keep your hands and wrists warm while letting your fingers stay free. This pattern features a simple afterthought thumb, so you don't have to make any increases. There are two sizes: for women and for men.
Size: women(men).
Measurements: length from cuff to index finger tip 21(22.5) cm, width across the palm 9(9.5) cm.
Fingerless gloves: supplies
- For the women’s fingerless gloves: 1 ball of Novita Viola yarn (80% wool, 20% polyamide, 50 g = 200 m) in brown (663), and 1 ball of Isager Silk Mohair yarn (75% kid mohair, 25% silk, 25 g = 212 m) in Terra (33)
- For the men’s fingerless gloves: 1 ball of Knitting for Olive Merino yarn (100% merino wool, 50 g = 250 m) in Mustard, and 1 ball of Filcolana Alva yarn (100% alpaca, 25 g = 175 m) in Curry (285)
- double-pointed needles 3.5 mm (US 4) or size needed for gauge
- tapestry needle
Gauge: 26 sts and 34 rnds = 10 cm.

Tips!
- Both the women’s and men’s fingerless gloves are knitted with two strands of yarn held together: one fingering/4-ply weight and one lace weight. You’ll need slightly less than one ball of each, making this pattern perfect for using up partial skeins you have at home.
- You’ll need about 40 g total for the women’s size (about 26 g of Novita Viola and 14 g of Isager Silk Mohair) and about 45 g for the men’s size (28 g of Knitting for Olive Merino and 17 g of Filcolana Alva). These are estimates: your own gauge and yarn choices affect the exact amount you will need.

How to knit the Fingerless gloves:
- Take one strand of each yarn and cast on 44(48) sts. Distribute them onto four needles: for the women’s size, you can arrange them as 10-12-10-12, and for the men’s size, 12 on each needle. Join in the round. The start of the round is between needles 4 and 1.
- Work [k2, p2] rib until the cuff measures about 7(8) cm.
- Continue in stockinette stitch (knit every rnd) until the piece measures 6(6.5) cm from the cuff.
- On the next rnd, make the thumb opening. For the left-hand glove, work it on needle 2: Knit the first 3(3) sts. Take a contrasting yarn (any leftover yarn) and knit the next 7(7) sts with it. Slip those 7(7) sts back onto the left needle, and continue knitting with the glove yarn.
- Keep knitting in stockinette stitch until the piece is about 9(10) cm from the cuff or until you reach the base of your pinky finger. Then start the fingers.
- Pinky finger: Work needles 1–3 as usual. On needle 4, k5(6) and place them on hold on needle 3. Knit the remaining 6 sts on needle 4. Then knit the first 5(6) sts on needle 1 and move the rest to needle 2 without knitting them. Cast on 3 new sts between needles 4 and 1. You now have 13(15) sts for the pinky. Leave the other sts on hold. Use an extra needle as a sixth needle. Distribute the sts on needles 1 and 4 onto three needles and knit in the round for 8(10) rnds. Bind off. Pick up 3 sts at the pinky’s base, return the sts on hold to your needles, and knit 3 rnds on all sts in stockinette.
- Ring finger: Pick up 5(6) sts from the palm side and 5(6) sts from the back of the hand, leaving the other sts on hold. Cast on 3 sts at the base of the ring finger and knit as for the pinky. Pick up 3 sts at the ring finger’s base, return the sts on hold to your needles, and knit 3 rnds on all sts.
- Middle finger: Pick up 6(6) sts from the palm side and 6(6) sts from the back of the hand, leaving the other sts on hold. Cast on 2(3) sts at the middle finger’s base and knit as before. Do not work any extra rnds in between; move straight to the index finger.
- Index finger: Use the remaining 12 sts and pick up 4(6) more from the base of the middle finger. Knit as before.
- Thumb: Carefully remove the contrasting yarn from the thumb opening and place those sts on needles. Place the sts at the top and bottom edges of the opening onto separate needles. Pick up sts from both sides of the thumb opening so you have 17(18) sts total. Distribute them on three needles. Knit in the round for 10(12) rnds. Bind off.

Right-hand glove
Knit in the same way as the left-hand glove, but make the thumb opening on needle 3: k2(2) with the glove yarn, then k7(7) with a contrasting yarn. Otherwise, follow the same instructions as for the left-hand glove.
Begin working the fingers on needle 1, so finish the previous rnd completely first. Then move the last 5(6) sts from needle 1 to needle 2. Work the finger sections as you did for the left-hand glove.
Finishing
Weave in all ends on the wrong side. If you like, you can finish the gloves by wet blocking or steaming.
