Size: smaller(larger).

Finished mitten measurements: Length from cuff to tip: 18.5(19.5) cm; width at palm: 9.5(10) cm; thumb length: approximately 7(8) cm.

Men’s mittens: materials

  • 100 g of Novita 7 Brothers yarn (80% wool, 20% polyamide, 100 g = 200 m) in shade 060 sand
  • 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles
  • Tapestry needle

Note: These mittens are designed so that you will need just one skein of yarn. Therefore, in the larger size, the cuff is knitted slightly shorter than in the smaller size.

Stitch patterns:

  • Rib stitch: *Knit 1, purl 1*; repeat from * to * to the end of the round.
  • Stockinette stitch: Knit all stitches.
  • Waffle stitch: You will need a stitch count divisible by three. Rounds 1 and 2: *Knit 1, purl 2*; repeat from * to * to the end of the round. Rounds 3 and 4: Knit all stitches.

Gauge: 24 sts and 36 rounds = 10 cm.

Men’s mittens: instructions

Left-hand mitten

1. Cast on 48(52) sts. Distribute them evenly onto four needles, 12(13) sts on each. Join to knit in the round, with the beginning of the round between needles 4 and 1.

2. Work k1, p1 ribbing for about 14(13) cm if you want to make the double-folded cuff. Otherwise, work the ribbing for about 8 cm.

3. Knit one round in stockinette stitch. If knitting the larger size, decrease 1 st by knitting 2 sts together at the end of the round (you will have 51 sts). Also, transfer the first st from needle 3 to needle 2. In the smaller size, keep the stitch distribution unchanged.

4. Work stockinette stitch on needles 1 and 2, and waffle stitch on needles 3 and 4. Continue until the mitten measures 6(6.5) cm from the cuff.

5. On the next round, make the thumb opening on needle 2: Knit the first 3(3) sts with the mitten yarn. Then, knit the next 7(8) sts with a different colored yarn (see photo 1). Slip these sts back to the left needle and continue knitting with the mitten yarn (see photo 2).

6. Continue working the palm until the mitten measures 16(17) cm from the cuff or until it covers your index finger.

Work the mitten tip decreases as wedge decreases: Decreases are made at the beginning of needles 1 and 3, and at the end of needles 2 and 4.

  • Needles 1 and 3: At the beginning of the needle, k1 and make a skp decrease: slip 1 st knitwise, k1, pass the slipped st over the knitted st. Knit the remaining sts on the needle.
  • Needles 2 and 4: Knit until there are 3 sts left on the needle. Knit 2 sts together, knit the last st.

Continue working these decreases on every round until there are 8 sts remaining, that is, 2 sts on each needle. Cut the yarn, draw it through the remaining sts, and tighten.

Thumb

1. Carefully remove the different colored yarn at the thumb opening (see photo 3) and transfer the sts to needles. Place the sts from the upper and lower edges of the opening onto separate needles (see photo 4). Pick up additional sts from both sides of the thumb opening so that you have 17(19) sts in total for the thumb. Distribute the sts onto three needles (see photo 5).

2. Work stockinette stitch until the thumb measures about 6(7) cm or until half of your thumbnail is covered. For the thumb tip decreases: knit 2 sts together at the end of each needle. Continue until you have 6 sts remaining, that is, 2 sts on each needle. Cut the yarn, draw it through the sts, and tighten.

Right-hand mitten

Knit in the same way as the left-hand mitten, but work the waffle pattern on needles 1 and 2. Make the thumb opening on needle 3: Knit the first 2(2) sts with the mitten yarn and the next 7(8) sts with a different colored yarn.

Finishing

Weave in the yarn ends on the wrong side of the work. If you'd like, you can finish the mittens by soaking or steaming them.
