Crochet linen baskets: easy patterns for two different styles

These beautiful crocheted linen baskets are perfect for a sauna or its entryway. They also make a lovely gift, for example, for a cottage. The crocheted linen basket is made from linen yarn dyed in Finland.

Large crocheted linen basket

Size: The base diameter is 24 cm (9.5 in), and the height is 25 cm (10 in).

Materials:

50 g Veera linen yarn: for the basket with a gray edge, 200 g gray and 150 g orange
Crochet hook 4 mm (G-6) or according to your gauge.

Stitch pattern

Crochet striped single crochet in a spiral: always proceed directly to the next round. Work the spiral in two colors: crochet half of each round in color A and half in color B.

Gauge

14 sc = 10 cm (4 in)

How to crochet the large linen basket

Make a magic ring with color A (orange). Rnd 1: work 1 hdc and 8 dc into the magic ring = 10 sts. Rnd 2: with color A (orange), work 2 sc in each of the first 5 sts of the round. Pull up a long loop so the stitches don’t unravel.

Switch to color B (gray), and in the next st work 1 ch and 2 sc, then 2 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Pull up a long loop and set aside = 20 sts total. On every round, pull up a long loop on the last stitches and mark them with stitch markers. Move the markers to the last stitch of every round to keep the round start in the same place throughout.

Rnd 3: with color A (orange), in the stitches made with color B (gray) on the previous round, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in the next stitch*, repeat *–* a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B in the stitches made with color A. Notice how the spiral stripes continue evenly round after round. You now have 30 sts.

Rnd 4: with color A, work 1 sc in each stitch previously made with color B for a total of 15 sc. Then with color B, do the same in the stitches made with color A = 30 sts total. From now on, on every even-numbered round, work 1 sc in each stitch.

Rnd 5: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 40 sts.

Rnd 7: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 50 sts.

Rnd 9: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 60 sts.

Rnd 11: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 70 sts.

Rnd 13: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 80 sts.

Rnd 15: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 10 times. Then do the same with color B = 100 sts.

Rnd 17: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 110 sts.

Rnd 19: with color A, *work 2 sc in one stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 10 sts*, repeat from * to * a total of 5 times. Then do the same with color B = 120 sts.

Continue crocheting the spiral stripes without further increases until the basket’s side is 20 cm (7.9 in) tall. Then continue for another 5 cm (2 in) in a spiral with color B (gray). In the last 5 sts, work 1 sl st in each, cut the yarn, and pull it through the final stitch.

Weave in all ends. Your large linen basket is finished.

Small crocheted linen basket

Size: base diameter 15 cm (6 in), height 17 cm (6.7 in).

Materials:

150 g of Veera linen yarn: for the basket with a gray edge, 50 g gray and 100 g orange
Crochet hook 4 mm (G-6) or according to your gauge.

Stitch pattern

Crochet single crochet stitches in a spiral: always move directly to the next round.

Gauge

14 sts = 10 cm (4 in).

How to crochet the small linen basket

Make a magic ring with orange yarn. Rnd 1: with orange, ch 1, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, and 8 dc into the magic ring = 10 sts.
Continue with orange, following the increase instructions from the large basket pattern until you have 70 sts. Then keep working in orange with those 70 sts.
When the side is 11 cm (4.3 in) tall, switch to gray yarn, crochet another 6 cm (2.4 in), and finish as instructed for the large basket. Your small crocheted linen basket is ready.
