Wool socks pattern: easy instructions for knitting cozy basic socks
Once you learn to knit your own wool socks using this easy pattern for beginners, you’ll carry the skill with you forever. The basic sock pattern is flexible, allowing for such modifications as colorwork designs, as long as the heel and decreases are worked correctly.
Size: approximately 30(38)46.
Wool socks pattern: materials
- 100(100)200 g of Novita 7 Brothers yarn in color ‘sand’ (060).
- Double-pointed needles size 3½ or or size needed to obtain gauge.
Stitch patterns:
Ribbing in the round: *2k, 2p*, repeat *–*.
Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.
Gauge: 21 sts of stockinette stitch = 10 cm.
Wool socks pattern: instructions for success
1. Cast on 40(48)56 sts and distribute them evenly onto four double-pointed needles, 10(12)14 sts on each. The start of the round is always between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 12(14)16 cm.
2. Begin the heel flap by working the sts from needle I to needle IV in ribbing (= 20-24-28 sts). Leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn the work and start reinforced knitting: 1st row: (wrong side) slip 1 st (yarn stays on wrong side) and purl the rest. Turn the work. 2nd row: (right side) *slip 1 st, yarn on wrong side, knit 1 st*, repeat *–* to the end of the row. Turn the work. Repeat rows 1–2 a total of 10(12)13 times (= 20-24-26 rows).

3. Knit another wrong side row and begin the heel turn decreases: continue the reinforced knitting as before. Knit the right side row until 7(9)10 sts remain. Work a slip-knit-pass decrease (slip 1 st knitwise, knit 1 st, pass the slipped st over the knitted st) and turn the work. Slip 1 st, purl 6(6)8 sts, and purl the next 2 sts together, then turn the work. Slip 1 st, knit until 6(8)9 sts remain, work a slip-knit-pass decrease. Continue decreasing the side sts in the same manner while the center sts remain at 8(8)10. When the side sts are gone, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles (4,4–4,4–5,5). Knit the 4(4)5 sts on needle IV to bring the yarn between the needles.
4. Pick up 10(12)14 sts onto the free (I) needle from the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and needle II. Knit the 4(4)5 sts on the heel flap and then the picked-up sts through the back loop knitwise using the left heel needle. Knit the sts on needles II and III. Now pick up 10(12)14 sts + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap using the needle with 4(4)5 sts, knit the picked-up sts through the back loop, and the 4(4)5 sts of the heel flap knitwise.
5. Continue with all 50(58)68 sts in stockinette stitch and work the gusset decreases: knit the last 2 sts of needle I together knitwise and work a slip-knit-pass decrease at the beginning of needle IV. Repeat the decreases every 2nd round until 10(12)14 sts remain on each needle.
6. Continue in stockinette stitch until the foot measures 15(20)25 cm or the sock covers your little toe. Then begin the toe decreases for either a wedge or star toe.
Wedge toe: At the end of needles I and III, knit 2 sts together and 1 st knitwise, and at the beginning of needles II and IV, knit 1 st and work a slip-knit-pass decrease. Work these decreases every 2nd round until 5(6)7 sts remain on each needle. Then work the decreases every round. When 8 sts remain, cut the yarn, thread it through the sts, tighten, and fasten off securely.
Star decreases: Knit 2 sts together in the middle and at the end of each needle = 32(40)48 sts. Knit 3(4)5 rounds without decreases and repeat the decreases in the middle and at the end of each needle = 24(32)40 sts. Knit 2(3)4 rounds without decreases and then repeat the decreases = 16(24)32 sts. After each decrease round, work 1 less round without decreases. Continue the decreases in this manner until 8 sts remain. Cut the yarn, thread it through the sts, tighten, and fasten off securely.
