Sunflower granny square: crochet it round by round
The sunflower granny square is crocheted round by round, changing colors as you go. Also known as sunburst granny squares, these squares are just as versatile as traditional granny squares, so they’re perfect for making flowery clothing, accessories, and home textiles.
Square size: Using a 3 mm hook, each square measures about 9 × 9 cm (3.5 × 3.5 in).
Sunflower granny square—supplies:
- Dark brown, lighter brown or orange, yellow, and white yarn
- A crochet hook that suits your yarn weight (3 mm in the sample)
- A tapestry needle for finishing
Abbreviations:
- dc = double crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
Sunflower granny square—instructions:
Crochet a foundation chain with dark brown yarn: make a slip knot and chain 5. Close the chain with a slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 3, which counts as the first double crochet of the round. Then work 15 dc into the ring. Close the round with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the first dc. You now have 16 dc. Break the yarn.

Round 2: Switch to lighter brown or orange yarn. Work one puff stitch into each dc from the previous round. Attach the yarn with a slip stitch in any dc from the previous round, then chain 3. *Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Repeat three times to end up with 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops at once, then chain 1 to close.* Repeat *–* until the end of the round, for a total of 16 puff stitches. Close with a slip stitch in the first puff stitch. Break the yarn.

Round 3: Switch to yellow yarn. Attach it with a slip stitch in the chain stitch between two puff stitches from the previous round. Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), then work 3 more dc into the same space, but don’t complete the last yarn over of each dc so that you have 4 loops on the hook in total. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops at once. Chain 2, then work the next group in the same way, this time finishing with 5 loops on the hook before pulling them through. Continue working these groups of dc around. Close with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the first dc. Break the yarn.

Round 4: Switch to white yarn. Attach it with a slip stitch in the chain space between two dc groups. Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and work 2 dc into the same space. *In the next space, work 3 treble crochets + 3 chains + 3 treble crochets (forming a corner). In the next space, make 3 dc, then 3 hdc in the next, and 3 dc in the next.* Repeat *–* twice more. Then work 3 treble crochets + 3 chains + 3 treble crochets in the corner, 3 dc in the next space, 3 hdc in the next space, and close the round with a slip stitch in the 3rd chain of the first dc. Continue with white yarn.

Round 5: Work single crochet around the square: make 1 sc in every stitch and 4 sc in each corner. Close the round with a slip stitch. Break the yarn and weave in the ends on the wrong side of the sunflower square.
