Square bag—supplies

  • knitting yarn (Nalle wool blend yarn)
  • recycled jeans
  • jacket zipper, 25 cm (about 10 inches)
  • blue sewing thread.

Square bag from granny squares—instructions

  1. Crochet 12 granny squares.
  2. Crochet six squares together with single crochet stitches. Border the joined squares with single crochet. Repeat with the remaining squares.
  3. Cut four pieces from the jeans that are one centimeter (just under 0.5 inch) bigger on all sides than the crocheted squares (in the sample, the dimensions are 25 × 17.5 cm/about 10 × 7 inches).
  4. Cut a strip from the jeans for the bag’s sides and bottom. The length should be 2 × the bag’s height + its width + seam allowance, and the strip is 18 cm wide (about 7 inches). (In the sample, the measurements are 17.5 + 17.5 + 25 cm = 50 cm/6.9 + 6.9 + 9.8 inches = 23.6 inches.)
  5. Sew two denim side pieces together with right sides facing, leaving the other long sides open. Turn them right side out and press the seams neatly. Check the height against the crocheted sides, fold any excess inward, press, and sew the top edges.
  6. Fold the denim strip in half lengthwise, sew it into a tube with right sides together, then turn it right side out. Press so the seam is centered on one side.
  7. Sew the zipper onto the bag.
  8. Pin the denim pieces to form the bag. Check the length of the strip, remove the pieces, and finish its ends.
  9. Pin the pieces together again. Secure the corners with a few stitches, then sew the pieces together a couple of millimeters from the edges.
  10. Hand-sew the crocheted sides to the bag.
  11. Cut a strap from the jeans’ inseam (your chosen length × 4 cm/1.6 inches). Press the edges together and sew a crocheted double crochet band over both edges.

Tip!

Cut the bag’s interior pieces from the seat of the jeans so you’ll have inside pockets.
