Kotona is an invitation to embrace the Nordic way of life—a life that celebrates simplicity, sustainability, and the beauty of the unexpected.

January 7, 2025

Finland, the happiest country in the world for eight years running, isn’t just about quiet forests, whimsical Moomins, and the Northern Lights putting on their own light show in Lapland. It’s also about homes where happiness is handmade and simplicity is sacred.

Finland has cracked the code on living well. It’s not about perfection or luxury, but about creating homes and lives that are functional, sustainable, and surprisingly joyful. Now, Finland is sharing its blueprint for happiness with the world through Kotona (Finnish for “at home”), the country’s first international digital media platform dedicated to the Nordic lifestyle: homes, cottages, saunas, design, renovating, DIY, and plants and gardening.

Join us on an adventure and dive into the beauty of the unexpected:

Kotona celebrates lived-in spaces, surprising details, and the joy of imperfection. Visit Justiina and Heikki’s colorful home here!
Learn how Finns tackle DIY projects that are simple and satisfying, from building a firewood rack to painting a masonry stove with stripes.
Kotona offers simple, easily attainable ideas for greener living—whether it’s repurposing old furniture or creating a balcony garden. Check out how Pitta grows everything from grapevines to dahlias on her 20-square-meter balcony!
Kotona shows how small, thoughtful choices can have a big impact, for both people and the planet. Step inside the eco-home of Laura and Mika’s family. Could you believe it's built from straw, wood, and clay?

Part of the renowned A-lehdet media group, Kotona is a Finnish lifestyle media brand founded in 2016. Our 25-member editorial team is supported by an in-house photography department and a wide network of freelance writers and photographers. We create our content with journalistic ambition, adhering to the Finnish guidelines for journalists. We only feature real homes, people, and photos in our stories.
