The neck warmer is the perfect accessory for the winter—here’s how to knit this must-have accessory yourself

This neck warmer not only keeps your neck warm but also covers your stomach and back. It stays securely in place and fits smoothly under a coat. The front and back pieces of this bib-style neck warmer are knitted identically in half brioche stitch.

Materials needed:

  • 250 g of Gepard Garn PuF yarn (70% cotton, 25% baby alpaca, 5% merino wool; 50 g = 90 m), shade 729 Light Denim
  • Long 6 mm (US 8) knitting needles and 6 mm (US 8) circular needles (60 cm)
  • Stitch marker and tapestry needle

Gauge: 15 stitches and 12 rows = 10 cm. Note: Rows are counted based on the knit stitches, which are elongated to span two rows.

The yarn used in this pattern will shrink about 10% in length after washing. Bear this in mind if you want the neck warmer to be an exact length.

You’ll get beautiful and neat edge when you slip the first stitch of every row and knit the last stitch as usual.
Neck warmer in half brioche stitch

Neck warmer—instructions:

The neck warmer is knitted seamlessly from the bottom up to the shoulder, then worked from the top down. The front and back pieces are identical, so the garment can be worn either way. For clarity, the instructions refer to the front and back separately.

Cast on 59 sts.

Front piece

Ribbing

1st row (WS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), then *purl 1, knit 1 through back loop*; repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, knit 1.

2nd row (RS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), then *knit 1, purl 1 through back loop*; repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, knit 1.

Continue until the ribbing measures about 5 cm. End with a right side row.

Half brioche stitch

Begin the half brioche stitch. Start on the wrong side.

1st row (WS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), knit all remaining sts. Turn work.

2nd row (RS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), *purl 1, knit 1 into the st below the next st*; repeat from * to * until 2 sts remain. Purl 1, knit 1. Turn work.

Repeat rows 1 and 2. Continue until the piece reaches about 40 cm or desired length. End with a right side row.

Neck

For the neck, decrease 3 sts at the shoulder, then make the same number of increases.

First, knit the left shoulder:

1st row: Beginning on the wrong side, slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit the next 17 sts. Turn work.

2nd row: Make a skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1 and pass the slipped st over), then continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 16 sts. Turn work.

3rd row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit the remaining 16 sts. Turn work.

4th row: Make a skp decrease, then continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 15 sts. Turn work.

5th row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit the remaining 15 sts. Turn work.

6th row: Make a skp decrease, then continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 14 sts. Now you have 15 sts remaining. Turn work.

7th row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit all remaining sts. Turn work.

8th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row by knitting into the front and back loop of the first st. In other words, knit the same st twice. With the remaining sts, continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch. Turn work.

9th row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit all remaining sts. Turn work.

10th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row in the same way as before. With the remaining sts, continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch. Turn work.

11th row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit all remaining sts. Turn work.

12th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row. With the remaining sts, continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch. There are now 18 sts on the needles.

13th row: Slip the first st (yarn in front) and knit all remaining sts. Break the yarn and leave the sts on hold.

Place the middle 23 sts on a circular needle or spare yarn to hold.

Right shoulder:

1st row: Take a new yarn and start from the right side. Slip the first st (yarn in front) and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 15 sts. Knit the last 2 sts together. Turn work.

2nd row: Knit all sts. Turn work.

3rd row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 14 sts. Knit the last 2 sts together. Turn work.

4th row: Knit all sts. Turn work.

5th row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch for the next 13 sts. Knit the last 2 sts together. Now you have 15 sts remaining. Turn work.

6th row: Knit all sts. Turn work.

7th row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch to the end of the row. Turn work.

8th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row by knitting into the front and back of the first st. Knit the remaining sts. Turn work.

9th row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch until 2 sts remain. Knit 1, purl 1. Turn work.

10th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row. Knit all sts. Turn work.

11th row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch until 1 st remains. Knit 1. Turn work.

12th row: Increase 1 st at the beginning of the row. Knit all remaining sts. Turn work.

13th row: Slip the first st and continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch until 2 sts remain. Knit 1, purl 1. Now there are 18 sts on the needle.

Loosely cast on 23 sts onto the needle (as a continuation to the previous sts). Rejoin the left shoulder sts that were on hold on the needle. Purl 1, then continue the 2nd row of the half brioche stitch. There are now 59 sts in total.

Half-brioche neck warmer from the back

Back piece

Continue the work in the same way as the front piece by repeating the 1st and 2nd half brioche stitch rows. Continue until the piece measures about 40 cm. End with a right side row.

Ribbing

1st row (WS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), then *knit 1, purl 1 through back loop*; repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, knit 1.

2nd row (RS): Slip the first st (yarn in front), then *purl 1, knit 1 through back loop*; repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, knit 1.

Continue until the ribbing measures about 5 cm. Bind off.

Turtleneck

Pick up 39 sts around the neck in addition to the 23 sts already on the needle. There are a total of 62 sts. Place a stitch marker to the beginning of the round.

Begin twisted rib: *Knit 1 through back loop, purl 1 through back loop*; repeat to end of round.

Knit until the collar measures 16 cm. Bind off loosely.

Half-brioche texture of the neck warmer
In the collar of the neck warmer, both the knit and purl stitches are worked through the back loop, which makes the collar look the same on both sides.

Tip!

For a neat finish, pick up the collar stitches so that the knit stitches align with the knit stitches of the half brioche stitch.
