Knitted headband: knit this beautiful accessory in just a few evenings!

A knitted headband is perfect for staying warm in spring and autumn when a hat feels too hot. It’s also a fantastic project for using up leftover yarn! Even beginners can finish this accessory quickly: the headband is knitted in rib stitch, and the bow-like twist is easy to do by overlapping and sewing the ends together.

Materials for the knitted headband:

  • 40 g of Gepard Garn PuF yarn (70% cotton, 25% baby alpaca, 5% merino wool, 50 g = 90 m) in shade 729 Light Denim
  • Two double-pointed needles, size 3.5 mm (US 4)
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle or crochet hook (for joining the ends of the headband and weaving in the yarn)

Tip!

A headband made according to these instructions will be approximately 8 centimeters wide, but you can easily adjust the width to your preference by adding or removing stitches, or by using thinner or thicker yarn.

Knitted headband
The headband is knitted with a yarn that’s bulkier than standard sock yarn but with needles that are a couple of sizes smaller than recommended for that yarn. This results in a dense knit.

Instructions for the knitted headband:

Cast on 23 stitches on the needles.

Row 1: Slip the first stitch onto the right needle with yarn in front. Move the yarn to the back and *knit 1, purl 1*. Repeat *–* until one stitch remains. Knit the last stitch.

Row 2: Slip the first stitch with yarn in front. Move the yarn to the back and *knit 1, purl 1*. Repeat *–* until one stitch remains. Knit the last stitch.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the work measures about 50–55 cm. Try the headband around your head occasionally towards the end. The piece is long enough when it fits snugly around your head.

Binding off

Slip the first stitch onto the right needle. Knit the next stitch, so there are two stitches on the right needle. Pass the rightmost stitch over the left stitch and drop it off the needle, leaving one stitch on the right needle. Knit the next stitch and again pass the rightmost stitch over it. Repeat until the end of the row. Cut the yarn, leaving about 30 cm (so that it’s long enough for sewing the band together), and pull it through the last stitch.

Twist

Overlap the ends of the piece (see the pictures below). Sew the ends together with a darning needle or a crochet hook and weave in the remaining yarn. Finally, turn the twist right side out.

Tip!

Make a beautiful neck warmer to accompany your knitted headband! The yarn used in this headband is the same as in our popular neck warmer pattern.
