Crochet a granny-square tree from one square—easy mini ornaments
A granny square turns into a beautiful Christmas ornament with ease: crochet one square, fold it into a triangle, and stitch a couple of seams. The sweet mini tree can decorate your Christmas tree, a wreath, or a gift.
Granny-square tree—supplies:
- (scrap) yarn
- a crochet hook suited to your yarn weight
- a blunt tapestry needle
- pins (optional)
- a small jingle bell

Granny-square tree—instructions:
1. Crochet a granny square in any colors you like. The sample trees have six rounds, but you can make your square as large as you like.

2. Turn the granny square wrong side up as shown.

3. Fold two sides of the square inward. Pins can help hold the shape. Cut a length of yarn and stitch the edges together.

4. Thread the needle under the edge stitches and bring it back up at the next pair of stitches. The needle travels back and forth under the stitches, not over them. Leave enough yarn at the tree tip for a hanging loop.

5. Fold the bottom edge of the tree and sew it in place.
Tree trunk

7. Crochet the tree trunk with brown yarn. Begin with a slip knot.

8. Attach the yarn with a slip stitch to the middle space along the tree’s bottom edge.

9. Chain 3.

10. Work 4 double crochets into the same space. Chain 3 and secure to the tree edge with a slip stitch. Weave in the yarn ends.

11. Sew a small bell to the tip of the tree with a few stitches. Make a hanging loop from yarn and secure it with a couple of stitches.
Tip!
You can also decorate the tree tip with a wooden bead or a button.
