Make cozy granny square slippers in a snap

These colorful granny square slippers are easy to make by crocheting squares and then joining them. This project is a great way to use up the leftover yarn at the bottom of your basket. Visual instructions guide you through the assembly!

Size: Approximately 37–39 (US 6.5–8.5) depending on your crocheting gauge.

Granny square slippers—materials

  • Various colors of aran-weight yarn, such as Novita 7 Veljestä

  • Crochet hook (3–3.5 mm, US E/4–F/5)

  • Scissors

  • A tapestry needle for weaving in ends (you can also weave in ends with a crochet hook).

Though this pattern is designed for aran-weight yarn, you can also hold thinner yarn double or incorporate novelty yarns.

Granny square slippers—instructions

Begin by crocheting 12 granny squares [in Finnish]:

1. Chain 6 stitches and close the circle with a slip stitch in the first chain.

2. To start Row 1, chain 3 (this acts as the first double crochet). Begin every row with 3 chains. Then crochet 2 double crochets, chain 3, 3 double crochets, and repeat this sequence two more times, ending with chain 3. Close the row with a slip stitch into the third chain at the start. This row has 4 sets of double crochets (and corners).

3. For the second row, change color. Crochet 3 double crochets, chain 3, and 3 double crochets into each corner space. Then chain 1 and repeat this 3 more times. Finish the row with a slip stitch, just like the first row. You now have 8 sets of three double crochets.

Photo 3. The triplets of double crochets (8 total) are worked in dark red. The image also shows the next row for step 4.

4. Change color again for the third row. Crochet 3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets, chain 1 (you are at the corner now), and 3 double crochets, chain 1. Repeat until the row ends. Close with a slip stitch as before. Continue for two more rows using the same method, then finish by weaving in your ends with a crochet hook or needle.

5. Crochet six granny squares for one slipper. Use different colors if you like, or make them all the same.

In the photo, the two middle granny squares (one from the top and one from the bottom) form the slipper’s sole. Join the squares with single crochet stitches to create the three-dimensional slipper.

Finishing

Join the squares with chain stitches as shown in the photo above. Once all the pieces are joined, weave in the ends and lightly steam the slipper under a pressing cloth. Make and attach pom-poms to finish.
