Take a dip in the yard

Dreaming of your own swimming pool? These six enchanting pools make perfect beach holiday destinations

A swimming pool in the yard is far from an impossible dream. You can find these stunning pool areas in the yards of homes and properties featured on our website.

1. A pool with personality

Marjaana Lundberg's swimming pool exudes the warmth of southern climes and produces an exotic atmosphere. The kidney shaped pool required more design work than a standard rectangular model but its shape adds a wonderful dose of personality and a sense of luxury to the yard.

“This project was demanding and took a long time because we didn’t want to rush or make hasty decisions. I do not mind putting in extra effort to ensure the outcome will be to my liking,” Marjaana says.

The pool area is also enchanting at dusk, thanks to LED lights installed in the steps and at one end of the pool.

2. A touch of the archipelago

As this family’s summer home was being expanded, a “kid magnet”—a swimming pool—was placed in the yard. Extending from the terrace, Nicolina designed a gravel yard planted with grasses and other plants that fit the seaside vibe.

The pool is heated by an air-to-water heat pump and water is filtered through a sand filtration system.

3. Like the Mediterranean

In this yard, you could easily imagine being somewhere in Southern Europe! Merja Heinonen jokes that even the scorched lawn in mid-summer fits right into the atmosphere.

Regardless, the overall effect is irresistibly inviting: palm fronds sway on the terrace, citrus trees in pots ripen their fruit, and the shimmering turquoise pool beckons enticingly. Built in the 1960s and well past its prime, the pool got a new look with wooden slats around its outer edge.

Merja and her partner Hannu Hynninen spend almost every summer evening in their oasis.

“I couldn’t imagine a better summer spot,” Merja says.

4. Next to an old villa

Mia and Ulla admit that renovating their second home has sometimes felt like a work camp. Yet each summer, the old house has become ever more cherished and more in line with their personal style as the renovation has progressed.

They spent many summers planning the pool area with its outdoor shower and summer kitchen. A cozy seating corner has also been built next to the pool.

5. A shady spot by the pool house

When Anne-Maria Iltola’s children were little, about twenty years ago, a generously sized swimming pool was built in the middle of the lawn.

“A swimming pool had always been a dream of mine,” Anne-Maria tells us.

However, the pool began to look odd standing all by itself in the middle of the yard, which is why Anne-Maria decided to build a small house alongside it. Originally, the house was supposed to be built from scratch, but in the end, a prefab house was erected. The convenient terraces also make life easier.

“The idea behind the terraces was that in the morning, I could walk to the pool with a cup of coffee without getting my feet dirty.”

6. All the perks

Even though you can see the sea from their yard, splashing in the ocean can’t beat the crystal-clear, tropically warm water of a swimming pool. That’s what Nilla and Tomi, the residents of this home think.

They wanted plenty of space around the pool for both family and friends. Now the family’s swimming season starts on May Day and lasts until October or November. The summer kitchen they had dreamed of was built on the terrace.
