Size: Women’s (men’s). The slipper measures about 25 (28) cm from toe to heel.

Warm knitted slippers: supplies

  • 150 g of Novita 7 Brothers yarn, shade 802, multi-colored green-red
  • Circular needles and/or double-pointed needles size 3.5 mm (US 4), or as needed to match gauge
  • Blunt-tipped tapestry needle.

Stitch pattern

Garter stitch worked flat: Knit all stitches on both right-side and wrong-side rows.

Gauge: 19 sts in garter stitch = 10 cm.

How to knit the Warm knitted slippers

  1. Begin by knitting the slipper sole. A tip for choosing needles: If you don’t mark each decrease point, it may be easier to keep the end and side sts of the sole on separate double-pointed needles. On the other hand, the slipper leg is faster to knit on circular needles.
  2. Cast on 42 (47) sts loosely on a double-pointed needle and knit 8 rows in garter stitch [in Finnish] flat.
  3. Start knitting around the rectangular sole piece: Row 1 (right side = RS): knit 42(47) sts along one side, pick up 4 sts at the end of the rectangle, pick up 42(47) sts from the cast-on edge on the other side, and pick up another 4 sts at the other end = 92(102) sts. Turn work. Row 2 (wrong side = WS): increase 1 st in each corner of the sole as follows. Knit 1, pick up the strand between sts and knit it, knit 3, increase 1 st as before. Knit 42(47), increase 1 st, knit 4, increase 1 st as before, knit 42(47) = 96(106) sts. Turn work. Row 3 (RS): knit all sts. Row 4 (WS): increase 1 st again at the front corners of the sole. Knit 42(47), increase 1 st as before, knit 6, increase 1 st as before, knit 48(53), turn work. Now you have 42(47) sts on each side, 8 sts at the toe, and 6 sts at the heel, totaling 98(108) sts. Work garter stitch flat for 12 more rows, for a total of 16 rows.
  4. Begin the toe decreases: Row 1 (RS): knit 41(46), knit 2 sts together, knit 6, work an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, and pass slipped st over knit st), knit 47(52) = 96(106) sts. Turn work. Row 2 (WS): knit all sts. Row 3 (RS): knit 40(45), knit 2 sts together, knit 6, work and skp decrease, knit 46(51) = 94(104) sts. Turn work. Row 4 (WS): knit all sts. Repeat these decreases 8(9) more times for a total of 10(11) decrease rows, leaving 78(86) sts.
  5. Next, work the following top decreases: Row 1 (RS): knit 31(35), knit 2 sts together, knit 8, turn. Row 2 (WS): knit 2 sts together, knit 8, turn. Then work each row like Row 2, decreasing at the start of both RS and WS rows and knitting one extra st at the end each time. After 20(24) more rows, for a total of 22(26) rows, you have 56(60) sts. Once the last WS decrease is done, finish the row and turn. Work garter st flat for 20(10) rows and bind off loosely.
  6. Finish by weaving in all ends. Sew the back seam of the slipper.
