From vase to pot
You have to try this: turn an old vase into a rustic clay pot with this easy tutorial
Slightly flawed or unappealing dishes get a new look by following Finnish blogger Katja Rinkinen’s instructions. The finished result, which resembles a clay pot, will be more durable if you apply wax or lacquer at the end.
Transforming a vase into a clay pot—materials:
- vases or pots that are rarely used or broken
- spray primer
- texture paste, acrylic medium, or gesso (a primer used for painting), plus chalk powder
- paintbrushes and a palette knife
- chalk paints in various shades
- empty yogurt cups
- stirring sticks and rubber gloves
- furniture wax or spray-on furniture lacquer.

Here's how to turn a vase into a clay pot
- First, apply spray primer to glossy or slick vases.
- Next, cover the pieces in texture paste. Spread store-bought or homemade paste with a brush or palette knife. If you'd like to make your own, mix gesso and chalk powder into a thick paste. Let the surface dry, and repeat as needed.
- Paint the pieces in layers of chalk paint of various shades. Let each layer dry before applying the next. You can mix colors in cleaned yogurt cups, for example.
- Use a palette knife to boldly scrape away different layers of paint on the surface. You can also wash fresh chalk paint away.
- Wax or lacquer the finished surface so it stands up better to wear.
