A house left empty for 40 years and a feeling that drowned out reason’s faint protests

There was a gaping hole in the ceiling, and every surface was coated in mouse droppings. The house had stood empty since the 1970s. Still, the creaking floors, log walls, and windows that seemed to laugh made my heart leap with joy, so we decided to buy it. “The renovation was so tough that simply looking at the photos brings tears to my eyes,” says Suvi, the mother of the family.
