Materials for the tufted monstera wall hanging:

  • One skein of 7 Veljestä yarn (or equivalent) of each color—for example, pink, green, and dark green. You can also use other yarns of similar weight.
  • Tufting needle
  • Pen for marking
  • 20 cm embroidery hoop
  • Burlap or “proper” tufting fabric, with approximately 7 cm of extra fabric extending beyond the edges of the hoop on all sides
  • Craft glue

Instructions for the tufted monstera wall hanging:

Monstera leaf diagram
Copy and scale the image so that the diameter of the design is 20 cm or matches the size of your embroidery hoop. A printable PDF of the monstera leaf pattern suitable for a 20 cm embroidery hoop can be found at the end of these instructions.

1. Print or trace the pattern above onto paper at your desired size. Place the paper against a window and trace the pattern onto the back side of the fabric with a pencil or marking pen. Remember that the design will become a mirror image, as you’ll be tufting from the reverse side. Secure and stretch the fabric onto the embroidery hoop.

2. If your tufting needle is adjustable, set it to position C and thread the first color. It doesn’t matter which color you start with.

3. Begin tufting. Push the tufting needle through the fabric and bring it back up. Do not pull on the yarn, as this will undo your work. Move to the next spot beside the tufted spot, repeat the same motion, and fill in the surface of the fabric. If the fabric loosens as you tuft, adjust the tension.

Finished tufted monstera wall hanging
You can also choose to tuft in a way that doesn’t fully cover the surface. If you like the color of the base fabric, tufting just the leaf will still look beautiful.

4. Once you’ve finished tufting, adjust the tension once more and ensure the design is aligned with the embroidery hoop’s fastening. This will make it look beautiful when displayed.

Reverse side of the tufted monstera wall hanging
Apply glue sparingly to the reverse side of the tufted piece, ensuring it doesn’t soak through the fabric and ruin the tufted surface.

5. Apply a thin layer of glue to the reverse side of the work. This prevents the yarns from unraveling and allows you to neatly hide the fabric edges.
