Tiny bathroom, big style: Amanda’s rosy reno with a spot for every jar

Even a small space can be fully functional with precise planning. Amanda had custom cabinets made for her bathroom, which measures roughly 11 ft². And she made the most of every inch!

Since she works as a hairdresser, Amanda Kanerva has plenty of cosmetics at home. So, when the bathroom was updated during a plumbing renovation, she wanted a lot more storage.

“In the old bathroom, there was only an impractical sink cabinet, and I kept my jars and tubes scattered around the house,” Amanda says.

She sketched out the fixture design herself and had it custom-built at a cabinet shop in Turku, Finland.

Three cabinets were installed above the enclosure for the wall-mounted toilet. Under the countertop, which spans the entire sink wall, Amanda wanted drawers and an open shelf.

Elsewhere in the home, the tones are earthy, but Amanda wanted more color in the bathroom. The burnt rose shade is called “cotto” from the Unique Home collection. The cabinet shelves are 15 cm (6”) deep—just right for cosmetic bottles, so they don’t end up hidden behind each other, making them easy to take and return.
Designing cabinets for a small bathroom was a matter of millimeters. Even the door frame measurements had to be considered so the drawers would open. The cabinets were ordered from Unique Home in Turku.

Because the custom cabinets’ delivery time was long, Amanda placed the order before the wall-mounted toilet enclosure was done. It was hard to predict the enclosure’s size ahead of time, and it turned out larger than expected.

“Luckily, the drawers fit. If I were starting again, I’d wait until after the enclosure was finished before ordering the cabinets. It would save a lot of worry.”

The bathroom is only 110 cm (43”) by 140 cm (55”). Even though the wall-mounted toilet enclosure brought the back wall closer to the door, the bathroom now feels bigger because every bit of space is used. Before, the back wall and right rear corner were almost empty.
There was a small measurement error with the countertop, and it ended up slightly too short. Amanda praises the carpenter, Nico Salmiosalo, who came up with the idea of adding tiles on the back and door walls to hide the mismatch. The Pukkila tiles behind the sink have a serrated texture.

The rest of the home has subdued, earthy tones, but Amanda wanted color in the bathroom. She gathered ideas on Pinterest.

“There didn’t seem to be many bathroom photos out there, and most just showed light-colored tile. Pinterest had more unusual options.”

She might have gone for a pure pink herself, but with her partner, they chose burnt rose.

They also didn’t want the most typical option for the wall tile.

“We really lucked out finding a tile with a serrated texture in almost the same color as the cabinet doors,” Amanda notes.

What did the renovation cost?

  • Cabinets and countertop approx. €1,900
  • Sink and faucet €570
  • Toilet bowl and wall-mounted toilet frame approx. €1,440
  • Tiles €260
  • Labor approx. €1,800

Total €5,970 plus plumbing, which was done alongside other renovations
