Colorwork from cuff to toe

Capture the radiant bloom of summer in the Sunflower socks—downloadable pattern!

These Sunflower socks were inspired by the golden glow of a late-summer flower field. The cuff is adorned with Latvian braids, and the flowers’ leafy stem runs all the way down to the toes.

Size: EU 38–39.

Sunflower socks: supplies

  • Novita 7 Brothers yarn in these amounts: under 100 g of natural white (010), under 100 g of straw (039), under 50 g of sunflower (268), 20 g of peat (691)
  • double-pointed needles 3 mm (US 2.5) or as needed to obtain gauge.

Stitch patterns

  • Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rounds.
  • Colorwork in the round: work stockinette stitch according to the chart.

Note! Secure floats longer than 4 sts by twisting the strands around each other on the wrong side of the work. Make the twists in different places so they don’t line up in the same stitch space on consecutive rounds.

Gauge: 21 sts in stockinette stitch = 10 cm.

Embroider the centers of the flowers last.

How to knit the Sunflower socks:

1. Using the sunflower-colored yarn, cast on 56 sts and distribute them onto four needles, 14 sts each. The beginning of the round is between needles I and IV.

2. Work a twisted stripe, i.e. Latvian braid [in Finnish] in the round with sunflower and peat as follows:

  • Round 1: *k 1 in sunflower, k 1 in peat*, repeat from * to * to the end of the round.
  • Round 2: Bring both yarns to the front of the work and keep them there throughout the twisted stripe. *P 1 in sunflower, take the peat yarn crossing under the sunflower yarn, p 1 in peat, then take the sunflower yarn crossing under the peat yarn,* repeat from * to * until end of round. The yarns will twist around each other, but they will unravel on the next round.
  • Round 3: Keep both yarns in front. *P 1 in sunflower, bring the peat yarn crossing over the sunflower yarn, p 1 in peat, then bring the sunflower yarn crossing over the peat yarn,* repeat from * to * until end round.

3. Begin the colorwork according to Chart 1. Start from row 1, repeating the 4-stitch pattern 14 times. Work rows 2–7 of the chart.

4. Work another twisted stripe as before. Then knit 1 round in natural white, redistributing the stitches on the needles: 13, 15, 14, and 14 sts.

5. Next, begin Chart 2 from row 1 and knit the 56-stitch pattern. Work rows 2–18 of Chart 2. Note! On rounds 6–12, work the flower centers (the peat-colored squares) in natural white. Then repeat rows 19–22 until the leg measures about 20 cm.

6. For the heel, place the sts from needles I and IV on the same needle = 27 sts. Knit the heel flap in colorwork by alternating 1 st in natural white and 1 st in straw so the pattern continues correctly at the center of the flap. Work 14 rows of colorwork for the heel flap, twisting the yarns arond each other at the beginning of each row.

7. Begin the heel turn decreases: continue the same colorwork as before. On the RS row of the heel flap, knit until 9 sts remain.

8. With the natural white yarn, make an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, k 1 and pass the slipped st over) and turn your work. Slip the first st, work 9 sts in colorwork, then purl 2 together with natural white, turn. Note! Always make the decreases in natural white. Slip the first st, knit until 8 sts remain, then skp. Continue in this way, decreasing the side stitches while the 11 sts in the center remain. When there are no more side sts left, put the heel flap sts on two needles: 5 sts on Needle I and 6 sts on Needle IV.

9. Next, with a free needle, pick up 14 sts along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the flap and needle II. Knit the 5 heel-flap sts and the picked-up sts through their back loops in colorwork according to row 1 of Chart 3. Work the sts on needles II and III in colorwork. Then pick up 14 sts + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap on the right flap edge with the needle that has 6 sts, knit the picked-up sts through their back loops, and knit the 6 heel-flap sts.

10. Continue with all 70 sts in colorwork and work the gusset decreases as shown in the chart. On needles II and III, work rows 2–4, then repeat rows 1–4. On needles I and IV, work rows 2–14. After the gusset decreases, you have 56 sts left: 13, 15, 14, and 14 sts.

11. Continue working the foot in striped colorwork on needles I and IV, and keep repeating rows 1–4 of Chart 2 on needles II and III.

12. When the foot measures about 19 cm, begin the toe decreases, continuing the colorwork to the tip of the sock. At the end of needles I and III, k 2 together, k 1, and at the beginning of needles II and IV, k 1, then skp. Note! Make these decreases using natural white, and always knit the 2 sts between the decreases in natural white. Work the decreases every other round 5 more times. Then decrease on every round until 2 sts remain on needle I. Cut the yarn, pull it through the remaining stitches, and weave in the ends.

13. Knit the second sock in the same way.

Finishing

Using the peat-colored yarn, embroider the flower centers by duplicate stitching as shown in Chart 2. Lightly steam the finished socks.
