Seahorse socks knitting pattern: materials

  • Novita Nalle yarn: just under 100(150) g in denim (160), and 50 (under 100) g in natural white (010)
  • Double-pointed needles size 3 mm (US 2.5)–3.5 mm (US 4), or according to your gauge.

Stitch patterns:

Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat from * to *.

Colorwork: work stockinette in the round following the chart and instructions. Note: Secure floats longer than 5 sts by twisting the strands around each other on the wrong side. Shift these twists to different spots so they don’t line up in the same stitch space on consecutive rounds.

Stockinette in the round: knit all rounds.

Gauge: 25 sts in stockinette or colorwork = 10 cm.

How to knit the Summery wool socks

Cast on 64(72) sts with the denim blue yarn onto double-pointed needles and distribute them evenly across four needles, 16(18) sts each. The beginning of the round is always between needles I and IV. Work ribbing in the round for 3(4) cm. Then knit 1 more round in denim. Start the colorwork from row 1 of the chart as follows: knit section A–B (= 2 sts), repeat section B–C 4(5) times (=16–20 sts), knit the 29-st pattern, repeat section D–E 4(5) times (=16–20 sts), and knit section E–F (=1 st). Work chart rows 2–4, then repeat rows 1–4 again 1(2) time(s). For the seahorse motif, work rows 5–76, and for the small motif, repeat rows 5–8.

Note: When you’ve knitted row 44 of the seahorse motif, begin the heel flap with the denim blue yarn. Knit the sts from needle I onto needle IV = 32(36) sts. Turn your work and purl 1 row, and decrease 2 sts at the same time = 30(34) sts.

Turn your work and begin the reinforced stitch:

Row 1: (RS) *slip 1 st with yarn in back, k1*, repeat from * to * to the end of the row. Turn work.

Row 2: (WS) slip 1 st purlwise, keeping the yarn on the wrong side, and p the remaining sts. Turn work.

Repeat rows 1–2 for a total of 14(16) times = 28(32) rows.

Purl one more WS row and begin the heel turn decreases: continue in the same reinforced stitch as before. On the right side of the heel flap, k until 11(13) sts remain. Work an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, k1 and pass the slipped st over) and turn work. Slip the first st purlwise, p8, then p the next 2 sts together, turn work. Slip the first st, k until 10(12) sts remain, work an skp decrease. Continue like this, decreasing the side sts while keeping 10 sts in the center. When the side sts are used up, divide the heel flap sts onto two needles, 5 sts each. K the 5 sts on the right needle. The beginning of the round is now between the needles.

Next, pick up 14(16) sts along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and needle II using a free needle. Begin the colorwork pattern on needle I as at the start of the sock, k the 5 heel flap sts, and k the picked-up sts through the back loop. Continue the colorwork on needles II and III from row 45. Now pick up 14(16) sts along the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st between needle III and the heel flap with the needle holding 5 sts. Position the colorwork so that the pattern lines up at the start of the round. K all the picked-up sts through the back loop, plus the 5 heel flap sts.

Continue working all 72(80) sts in colorwork and begin the gusset decreases: at the end of needle I, k the last 2 sts together with the denim blue yarn, and at the beginning of needle IV, work an skp decrease with the denim blue yarn. K 1 plain round. Make the decreases as above every other round until you have 64(72) sts. Note: The pattern will break where the gusset decreases are, but it will continue correctly as soon as the decreases end. After row 76 of the chart, work the small colorwork motif on all sts until the foot length is 19(23) cm or your little toe is covered. Then begin the toe decreases using the denim blue yarn.

Wedge toe decreases: On needles I and III, k the last 2 sts together, then k1, and on needles II and IV, k1 and then work an skp decrease. Work these decreases every other round until there are 6(7) sts on each needle. Then decrease on every round. When 8 sts remain, cut the yarn, pull it through the remaining sts, tighten, and weave in the end. Knit the second sock the same way, but follow Chart 2 so the seahorse is mirrored.

Finishing: Lightly steam the socks.

Tip!

If you’d like to try the same sock pattern in a different colorway, Nalle yarn comes in many lovely color options.
