Did your tulips grow too tall? Make a bright spring arrangement with a master florist’s tips
Long-stemmed tulips are the star of the show in this bright spring arrangement! With master florist Saija Sitolahti’s simple instructions, your arrangement will stay beautiful for a long time.
Spring tulip arrangement—supplies:
- 12 tulips
- chicken wire
- arrangement container
- branches, such as corkscrew hazel or any from your garden
- a few cut flowers for extra flair, such as iris and St. John’s wort
- a knife.

The arrangement can also be made from buds, but letting the flowers develop for a few days lets their stems take on more artistic shapes.
Spring tulip arrangement—instructions:
- Arrange the chicken wire in the container.
- Add water to the container.
- Remove the lowest leaves that would be in the water from the tulips and other cut flowers.
- First arrange the branches, then weave the tulips among them. Indoors, the dormant buds on the branches will soon sprout lovely little leaves.
- Once the flowers are in place, gently open the tulip petals with your fingers.

Position the chicken wire so that it extends a few centimeters above the container’s rim.

Manually opening the petals is called tulip massage. This trick won’t work on fully closed buds; the blooms need to be a bit more mature.

Move the arrangement to a cool spot overnight, but not below freezing, so it will last longer.
