Finished size: diameter 50 cm (19.75").

Small round rug—supplies:

  • 5 mm macramé cord, e.g., Creative Cotton Cord (100% cotton)
  • 10 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

The multicolored rug is worked in six shades. You’ll need one skein (25 m) of each color plus two skeins (50 m) of white, not including the fringe. For a solid-color rug, you’ll need about 150 m of cord.

Crocheted bathroom rug on the floor
The charm of this little rug are the colors that change with the round, but if you prefer a calmer look, crochet it in a single shade.

Small round rug—pattern:

The first stitch of every round is replaced by ch 1 for sc or ch 3 for dc. Close each round with a sl st. Numbers in parentheses show the total stitch count for that round.

Magic ring for the crocheted rug

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring and work 12 dc into the ring, or ch 4 and join to form a ring, then work 12 dc into it. Close the rnd with a sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 11 dc (12 sts).

Rnd 3: *2 dc in each dc of rnd 2*, repeat from * to * 12 times (24 sts).

Rnd 4: *1 dc, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from * to * 12 times (36 sts).

Rnd 5: *1 sc between every dc of rnd 4, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 36 times (72 sts).

Rnd 6: *1 sc in each ch-sp of rnd 5, 1 sc*, repeat from * to * 36 times (72 sts).

Rnd 7: *1 dc in each ch‑sp of rnd 6, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 36 times (72 sts).

Rnd 8: *2 sc in each ch‑sp of rnd 7*, repeat from * to * 36 times (72 sts).

Rnd 9: *1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat from * to * 24 times (96 sts).

Rnd 10: *2 dc in same st, skip next st of rnd 9, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 48 times (96 sts).

Rnd 11: *1 sc in ch‑sp of rnd 10, 1 sc in next dc*, repeat from * to * 48 times (96 sts).

When changing colors, join the cords with a sailor’s knot as shown.
Weave in the ends by untwisting the cord and weaving each of the three plies in a different direction using a tapestry needle.

Fringe

First, wrap the cord around a piece of cardboard or similar and cut to create strands about 20 cm (8") long. Attach them to the outermost stitches with a lark’s head knot as shown.

Untwist the strand ends and brush them out with a suitable brush or comb. If you’d like a shorter fringe, trim before separating the plies.
