Miia’s small bedroom fits even a walk-in closet: 5 clever ideas for tiny bedrooms

Decorating a small bedroom can sometimes resemble a game of Tetris. Kotona’s Managing Editor Miia Kauhanen solved her bedroom conundrum with a partition that doubles as bedside tables and creates a small walk-in closet. We put together five clever ideas to help you make the most of a small bedroom.

The bedroom doesn’t need to fit anything else than the bed. It’d be nice to have a walk-in-style closet at the back. Keeping these wishes in mind, architect Tapani Takkunen designed a 13-square-meter bedroom in our new CLT wooden house, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a partition that divides the space.

Interior designer Virpi Kanto drew up the partition based on my ideas. It serves as a shelf above the bed and has storage compartments on the sides.

A custom-made glass panel protects the wallpaper on the shelf. The white vase is by Kähler, and the gray one is by Hübsch. The brass candleholder and alarm clock are from Finnish Design Shop.

5 ideas for inspiration

1. The partition has a wooden frame covered with plasterboard and wallpapered on the front. It’s the width of a double bed and stands 165 centimeters tall instead of reaching all the way to the ceiling, which prevents the space from looking cramped. There is 68–73 centimeters of space on each side of the bed, which makes walking around it comfortable.

2. There’s no space for bedside tables, but the glass-topped shelf and the side compartments of the partition do the job. The compartments have hidden outlets and wall lamp switches in them, and you can use them to store phone chargers and cream tubs.

The frame of the partition is painted in a shade picked from the ‘Lush Foliage’ wallpaper by Rebel Walls. The bedspread is from Anno, the wool blanket by Lapuan Kankurit, and the wall lamps by House Doctor. The velvet curtains are from Hemtex, and Desso’s textile tiles are from Koolmat.

3. We commissioned the wardrobe that follows the slope of the ceiling from a cabinetmaker. This way, we could make use of the space near the ceiling and hide the flue running along the wall. The cabinets are painted in Tikkurila’s Pro Grey 1944.

4. The wardrobe had to be only 50 centimeters deep, instead of the standard 60, to keep the recommended 70 centimeters of walking room free. Our clothes still fit inside it with their hangers without difficulty. In a narrow space, a practical width for a cabinet door is 50 centimeters. We have additional storage in the bed’s pull-out drawers.

The flue is neatly concealed inside the closet. Next to it, there is a handy recess with hooks, perfect for hanging jeans and hoodies.

5. There are six velvet curtains in the bedroom, so we can drape them across the entire outer wall. The textile tiles are soft and improve the acoustics of the room.

The French balcony door airs the room effectively. Nuppu the cat loves gazing at the garden from there. The origami-inspired paper lamp is by Habitat, and the silk yukata was brought from Kyoto. The CLT wooden walls are waxed with Osmo Color’s Uviwax in the shade White Spruce.
