How to knit the short-legged colorwork socks:

  1. Cast on 60 sts with the soot-colored yarn onto four double-pointed needles, 15 sts per needle. The beginning of the round is between Needles I and IV. Work 2 rounds of ribbing in the round. Then knit 1 more round in soot while increasing 1 st on each needle = 64 sts.
  2. Begin the colorwork on the leg as follows: *k1 in white, k1 in soot*, repeat *–* to the end of the round. Continue in colorwork, and from now on, knit white sts in white and soot sts in soot.
  3. After you have worked 14 rounds in colorwork, move the sts on Needle I onto Needle IV for the heel flap = 32 sts. Break the white yarn and work the heel flap in soot. Leave the remaining sts on hold. Turn work, slip 1 st with the yarn on the WS, and purl the rest, decreasing 2 sts evenly = 30 sts.
  4. Turn work and start the reinforced heel stitch: Row 1 (RS): *slip 1 st, k 1*, repeat *–* another 14 times. Turn work. Row 2 (WS): slip 1 st and purl the remaining sts. Turn work. Repeat Rows 1–2 a total of 14 times (28 rows).
  5. Begin the heel decreases: continue working the reinforced stitch as before. On the RS, knit until 11 sts remain. Work an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, knit 1 and pass the slipped st over), then turn. Slip 1 st, p 8, p 2 together, turn. Slip 1 st, knit until 10 sts remain, skp. Continue in this way so the side sts decrease and the center 10 sts remain. When the side sts are used up, divide the heel flap sts between two needles, 5 sts on each. Knit the 5 sts on the right side. You are now at the center of the heel flap and the beginning of the round.
  6. Pick up the white yarn again and continue the colorwork from row 1 of the chart. On Needle I, pick up 14 sts along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the needles. Following the chart, knit the 5 heel flap sts and the picked-up sts through the back loop. Work the sts on Needles II and III in colorwork, decreasing 1 st according to the chart. Along the right edge of the heel flap, pick up 13 sts + 1 st between the needles. Knit these sts through the back loop, then knit the 5 heel flap sts on Needle IV. You now have 70 sts total.
  7. Work chart rows 2–14. On rows 2, 4, 6, and 8, decrease 1 st on Needles I and IV. After these gusset decreases, you'll have 62 sts in total (16 sts on Needle I, 16 on Needle II, 15 on Needle III, and 15 on Needle IV).
  8. Work the sole (Needles I and IV) in colorwork by knitting white sts in white and soot sts in soot. For the top of the foot (Needles II and III), follow the chart and then keep repeating chart rows 15–28.
  9. When the foot is about 18 cm long or your little toe is covered, begin the wedge decreases to shape the toe, still in colorwork. At the end of Needle I, k 2 together in white, then k 1 in soot. At the beginning of Needle II, k 1 in white, then skp in soot. At the end of Needle III, k 2 together in soot, then k 1 in white. At the beginning of Needle IV, k 1 in soot, then skp in white. Continue these decreases every other round. On the rounds between the decreases, work all the sts, including the ones formed by decreasing, in the colors that they already are. When there are 9 sts left on Needle I, decrease on every round until 10 sts in total remain. Break the yarns, thread the soot yarn on through the remaining sts with a needle, pull tight to close, and weave in the ends.
  10. Knit the second sock in the same way and steam the socks lightly.
