16-year-old crochet whiz stuns with a vibrant blanket: “I got into crocheting in sixth grade”
Sara, 16, has been doing handicrafts for 10 years. Her mother, Tiina, has admired her daughter’s dedication. Now, Sara has finished her biggest project so far. A nap feels extra dreamy wrapped in this eye-catching blanket!
Wow, what a blanket! Sara, how did you come up with the idea for it?
I got the idea to make a blanket after seeing similarly styled ones on TikTok and Pinterest. There was a pattern on Janie Crown’s site, but it was a paid pattern. Then I discovered a slightly different pattern for free on YouTube. The largest pieces in the Janie Crown pattern were bigger than in my blanket.
For the colors, I took inspiration from the blankets I’d seen, but since I wanted mine to be bigger, I searched Pinterest for extra color combinations.

How did you make the blanket?
I started with the largest pieces. Then I made granny squares, and toward the end, I crocheted half granny squares along the edges so they would be as straight as possible. Finally, I crocheted four smaller triangles for the corners. I didn’t follow any particular layout, and it took some time because I did not want the same colors placed too close to each other.
It took about ten months to finish. I began in August 2024 and completed it in May 2025.

How did it feel when the blanket was finally finished?
My main feeling was relief, because the project had taken so long. I was also very pleased with how it turned out. I was surprised by how diligent I stayed, since I sometimes jump from one crochet project to another when my interest or motivation fades.
The completed blanket has received plenty of compliments, curiosity, and admiration.

What kind of crafter are you?
I’d say I’m enthusiastic, productive, and detail-oriented. I often have a few projects in progress at the same time, so I don’t get bored. I enjoy crocheting gifts for my friends and family.
I’ve been interested in crafts since I was a child. I spent about ten years in a crafts club, learning all kinds of techniques. I got enthusiastic about crocheting in sixth grade, after watching English-language tutorials on YouTube.
Tiina, how did your daughter discover crafts at such a young age?
Sara initially joined a community crafts club at the adult education center because a friend encouraged her. Naturally, we parents supported her hobby. It felt wonderful to see her excitement, and we always tried to cheer her on.
Since Sara’s grandmother has been an avid crafter all her life, Sara has followed in her footsteps.
Sara wants to keep crafts as a hobby. She is currently studying to become a hairdresser, which is also a hands-on profession.
