Craft a frosted salt lantern from a jar with glue and salt
A salt lantern has a lovely, frost-kissed finish with just a few easy steps: besides the glass jar, all you need is ordinary table salt and glue. Make several at once, as they come together quickly!
Salt lantern: supplies
- A jam jar or glass jar that fits an LED tealight inside
- Craft glue
- Salt
- Spray varnish (if desired)
- Ribbon or string for decoration
Salt lantern from a glass jar: instructions
1. Wash and dry the glass jar thoroughly. You can easily make several salt lanterns at once.

2. Spread a generous, even coat of glue around the jar’s exterior.

3. Sprinkle salt over the glue and let it dry.

4. Add snowflake designs on top of the first salt layer by painting star shapes with glue. Then sprinkle on another layer of salt and let it dry.
5. If you plan to use the lantern outdoors or on a patio, a coat of clear spray varnish will help the salt resist the elements.
6. Tie ribbon or string around the neck of the jar.
7. Place an LED tealight inside the lantern and set it on a windowsill or table. Salt can easily flake off, so keep the lantern out of reach of little hands and pets.
