Rethink rattan: the rattan chair is a stunning addition to a modern home or terrace

Authentic rattan has made a spectacular return to our homes. So forget those stuffy ideas of the 1980s and the plastic imitations! Delicate and beautifully curved rattan chairs make stunning focal points in modern interiors. In the summer, the lightweight rattan furniture can even be taken outdoors—just be mindful of their placement.

Rattan brings coziness and warmth to an all-white interior, blends seamlessly with vintage finds, and evokes thoughts of summer. Rattan furniture suits many interior styles, and when properly maintained, it’s eco-friendly and durable. (Read to the end of the article to find out what can damage rattan!)

Caring for your rattan chair outdoors

It’s best to be mindful where you place rattan furniture. Too much moisture or dryness can harm it. Rattan can be damaged by rain, scorching sun, the heat of a fireplace, or being next to a hot radiator.

Rattan is lightweight, so a rattan chair or sofa is easy to carry outside in the summer—and in the evening, it’s best to move it under a canopy or indoors to protect it from morning dew or rain showers.

A porch, covered terrace, or glazed, shaded balcony are ideal places for rattan summer furniture. It’s advisable to bring rattan furniture even from covered terraces and balconies into the warm indoors before autumn rains and increased humidity. Moisture can grey and erode the surface and may cause rattan to crack. However, cold and frost don’t bother rattan at all.

Indoors, place rattan furniture away from radiators, blazing fireplaces, and sunny windows. In excessive heat, rattan dries out and becomes brittle, and the thinnest strands may break.

Because rattan doesn’t tolerate moisture, it shouldn’t be cleaned with lots of water either. Vacuuming with a brush attachment is the best way to keep rattan furniture clean. If necessary, you can wipe it with a well-wrung cloth and a mild, natural detergent. Dry the furniture immediately with paper or a towel after cleaning.

If the surface of your rattan furniture has become worn, you can carefully sand it with fine sandpaper and re-varnish or stain it. You can inquire about refurbishing rattan furniture at Annansilmät-Aitta.
