Sunset on the wall—Raisa’s DIY headboard shines with a built-in night light

Raisa built a headboard spanning the entire wall that looks like a calming landscape with birds. It also acts as a night light, thanks to its built-in LED lights.

Raisa, where did you get the idea for the headboard?

Previously, there was just an empty wall behind the bed, and I wanted something different and unique. I once saw similarly styled headboards online and even found an inspirational photo there. That headboard also combined lighting that shone beautifully from behind the panel. I wanted ours to stretch across the entire wall as well. We had twin babies at the time of planning and construction, and the indirect light shining from behind the panel worked perfectly for nighttime baby care. The LED strip we used is dimmable and can change color, so it was both stylish and practical as a night light.

The light gives the impression of a rising or setting sun. Nature motifs also appear elsewhere in the family’s home, so the birds added to the horizon help the bedroom’s atmosphere blend seamlessly with the rest of their decor. You can follow Raisa’s projects on Instagram at @bo_hem_raisa.

How did you make the headboard?

I renovate homes for a living, so I began planning the construction based on my own experience and know-how. I also browsed online for ideas and tips. I sketched and planned everything carefully before starting, and it really paid off because the outcome was exactly how I envisioned it! I haven’t had any regrets about how I did things.

First, I built a frame to which I attached the headboard panel. I used lightweight drywall, which was easy to cut and shape. I also added a padded tube between the panel and the wall, on top of which I placed the LED strip. That strip can easily be replaced, and the headboard is simple and quick to clean. It can also be removed from the wall altogether if we decide to move and sell our home.

Having done renovations before, Raisa made detailed plans before beginning construction. First, the frame’s lumber was screwed into the wall. The drywall headboard was then attached to the frame, after which the seams between the panels were taped and filled.
The entire piece was painted with Tikkurila’s V484 Ajopuu shade. Finally, a padded tube was slipped between the wall and the panel, and the LED strip was placed on top of it.

What’s the best thing about the headboard?

You won’t find a headboard like this in every home, and I love having something completely unique. It brings a lovely hotel-like ambiance to the room, too. Even our guests have been amazed by the transformation and wondered how we managed to build it ourselves.
