Quick guide to the kitchen: banish pesky fruit flies with a DIY trap
Fruit flies are unwelcome guests that often invade kitchens, especially in the fall. Learn how to trap them effectively with a homemade solution.
1. Make the fruit fly trap by combining cold water, sugar, vinegar, and a few drops of dish soap in a shallow dish. The flies will be drawn in and trapped due to the lack of surface tension.
2. Refresh the fruit fly trap mixture every day or two. Avoid leaving food out and ensure the trash is taken out daily. Secure the compost bin with a tight lid to keep fruit flies away from waste.
3. Fruit flies can enter your home if their eggs are on the surface of store-bought fruits. Reduce their numbers by washing fruits and vegetables as soon as you bring them home. Purchase only what you can consume in a timely manner. Avoid letting fruits over-ripen at room temperature, as this attracts flies.
