Pressed flower art—pick beautiful summer plants and preserve them in frames
A picture made with pressed flowers and leaves retains its color from season to season. Gather beautiful plants from your yard, meadows, or roadsides.
Pressed flower art—supplies:
- Picture frame with a mat
- Colored cardstock
- Paper glue
- Flower press, blotting paper, and newspapers
- Flowers and leaves for pressing
- Salt
- Tweezers for handling plants
- Wood glue
- Hammer
- Sewing supplies
- Scissors and pinking shears
Pressed flower art—instructions:
- Allow at least a week, preferably two, for pressing. If you don’t have a flower press, weigh your plants down with a stack of books. Replace the blotting paper or other porous white paper every few days, since newspaper ink may transfer onto the plants.
- Sprinkle a little fine salt on brightly colored flowers to help keep their colors vibrant.
- Once the plants are fully dry, arrange them on the cardboard any way you like. Carefully glue the flowers and leaves in place—tweezers can help you handle them. Let them dry completely.
- Frame your artwork.
Tip!
You can also arrange the flowers and leaves in the style of an old educational poster.

You can make a DIY flower press from old plywood or sturdy wooden boards. Check out our instructions! [in Finnish]
