Hyacinth arrangement ideas: 4 eye-catching pots for your garden or balcony

Hyacinths that tolerate light frost are low-maintenance and, like other bulb flowers, only need moderate watering—ideal for creating a potted flower arrangement. The cooler the temperature outdoors, the longer you’ll be able to enjoy their fragrant blooms. Once the flowers have faded, transfer the bulbs to a flower bed for next spring.

1. A bowlful of sweet fragrance

Have you discovered the glowing and delightful ‘Yellowstone’ hyacinth yet? This new, striking spring bloom doesn’t really need any other flowers around it. Simply add a few graphic birch twigs among the hyacinths and cover the bulbs with grass revealed by melting snow. Then your warm-toned yet tastefully stylish potted hyacinth arrangement is ready.

2. Dressed in rustic charm

An arrangement based on a single color is always a crowd-pleaser for a potted hyacinth arrangement. The rustic orange shades of the ‘Gipsy Queen’ hyacinth blend seamlessly with ‘Prinses Irene’ triumph tulips and the small-flowered ‘Cragford’ narcissi. Last autumn’s browned leaf mulch completes the overall look.

If you want the bulbs to flower by a certain date, keep them in a warm spot at first, then place them outdoors only when the blooms are at the right stage. In a cool environment, the flowers will open gradually.

3. Softly in the grasses

A gently harmonious potted hyacinth arrangement is created with white ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ crocuses, the small-flowered ‘Minnow’ narcissus, ‘Yellowstone’ hyacinths, and the white ‘White Magic’ persian grape hyacinth. Cover the soil with clumps of grass. Then add more grass casually among the plants, so the arrangement appears to emerge from a grass patch. A rustic old container provides a touch of rough-hewn charm.

4. A transformation

Choose plants that are still in bud so the arrangement transforms each day. At first, deep red ranunculus and the similarly hued, outward-reaching branches of coral dogwood take center stage. A pale purple ranunculus and ‘Remembrance’ crocus add interest at the front of the basket. When the hyacinths at last begin to blossom in your potted hyacinth arrangement, they bring extra color, height, and their lovely fragrance.
