How to crochet the potholder

Crochet three potholders in different colors, making two identical pieces for each. For rounds 1 and 2, use orange (green) and blue; for rounds 3–4, use green (blue) and orange; for round 5, use white; and for round 6, use blue (orange) and green.

Round 1: Make a foundation chain of 5 chain stitches and join it into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 2: Work into the ring 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet, 1 chain stitch, *2 double crochets, 1 chain stitch*, repeat *—* another 4 times, finish with 1 slip stitch into the 3rd chain stitch.

Round 3: Using two slip stitches, move to the next chain space and work 3 chain stitches + 1 double crochet + 1 chain stitch + 2 double crochets into it. *In the next chain space, work 2 double crochets + 1 chain stitch + 2 double crochets*, repeat *—* another 4 times, finish with 1 slip stitch into the 3rd chain stitch.

Round 4: Work 7 double crochets into each chain space.

Round 5: 1 chain stitch, *1 single crochet in each double crochet and 1 single crochet between the clusters, inserting the hook under Round 3*, repeat *—* another 5 times, finish with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch.

Round 6: Work 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets, then 1 double crochet + 1 chain stitch + 1 double crochet in the same stitch, *6 double crochets, then 1 double crochet + 1 chain stitch + 1 double crochet*, repeat *—* another 5 times, then 3 double crochets, finish with 1 slip stitch into the 3rd chain stitch. Leave a generous length of yarn at the end of the second piece for joining.

Finishing

Steam the pieces from the wrong side. Place the right sides together and join the edges with slip stitches using the color of the outermost round.

Many people recognize the African flower pattern from throw blankets. Made with bulky yarn, these flowers are lovely as potholders.
