Transform old sheets into a luxurious plush rug—see how to repurpose your scrap fabrics
Experience the luxury of a plush rug underfoot. Old sheets and leftover cotton fabrics are perfect for crafting a rug knotted onto non-slip mesh. Blending various shades adds depth and dimension to the surface.
Plush rug—materials:
- Approximately 2.5 kilograms of sheets or pre-cut fabric strips (about 2.5 cm wide)
- A piece of non-slip mesh, approximately 70×100 cm
- A 3–4 mm (US 3-6) crochet hook
- Scissors
Plush rug—instructions:
- Cut off the hemmed edges from both ends of the sheet. Cut or tear the sheet lengthwise into strips about 2.5 cm wide.
- After cutting the entire sheet, cut the strips into 17 cm long pieces. Plan your pattern and, if necessary, mark it on the non-slip mesh with a marker.
- Begin knotting, using a 3–4 mm crochet hook if needed. Fold a strip in half and crochet it onto the edge of the mesh through a mesh hole, so that the folded end forms a loop. Pull the ends of the strip through the loop with the crochet hook and tighten to form a knot.
- Crochet strips in the same way into every mesh hole, alternating colors according to your design. Tighten the knots well.
Note!
For a small rug like this, you can knot into every hole, but for a larger rug, it's better to knot into every other hole in an alternating pattern. Otherwise, the rug may become too heavy, and the non-slip mesh could tear under the weight. By knotting into every other hole, you'll need half as much fabric, and the rug will be finished more quickly.
This rug pattern was created in cooperation with Pääkaupunkiseudun Kierrätyskeskus, a Finnish non-profit company that sells donated secondhand items and aims to raise environmental awareness.
