Planting hyacinths in a vase

You can grow a wonderfully fragrant hyacinth in a vase—no soil needed. A warm spot helps the flower stem develop. Just make sure the bulb doesn’t rot.

Rinse the bulb thoroughly but gently before placing it in the vase. Let the roots just barely touch the water. Keep the bulb itself out of the water; it rots easily.

How to plant a hyacinth in a vase

Buy a pre-potted hyacinth. Wash the bulb and roots clean, and handle the delicate roots with care.
Gently add decorative gravel to the bulb vase.
You can add decorative crushed colored glass on top of the gravel so the lower part of the vase gets some color, too.
Gently ease the roots into the vase.
Pour in water so there's a narrow air gap between the base of the bulb and the water surface. Top us as needed.
