Polaroid-style photo frame

Materials:

  • Thick cardboard (about 60 × 90 cm)
  • A long ruler and a pencil
  • A utility knife
  • A hot glue gun
  • White cardstock
  • Crepe paper
  • Scissors
  • Silk ribbon (for hanging)

Instructions:

1. Measure a suitable opening in the cardboard. In our example, we used a 60 × 90 cm piece of cardboard and cut a 50 × 53 cm opening about 6 cm from the top edge. This leaves a wider white border at the bottom, just like a Polaroid. Then cut the opening with a utility knife.

2. Cut 10 cm-wide strips of crepe paper. Fold each strip lengthwise in half, then cut out petal shapes. For each flower, you’ll need three different sizes of petals, five of each size.

Shaping the petals of paper flowers.
Twist the petals into a spiral, then unfold them to give them a poppy-like shape.

3. Twist each petal into a ‘corkscrew’ shape, then open it again. Use your thumb to shape the petals from the center toward the edge, so they take on a curved form.

Glue the petals in a circular, layered arrangement on the cardboard base.

4. Cut a round piece of white cardboard, about 6–8 cm in diameter. Glue petals to the cardboard in a circle, starting with the largest ones in the bottom layer. After the five large petals are attached, continue with a layer of the medium-sized petals, and finish with the smallest ones.

Create the flower center by fringing and rolling.
Fringe the paper for the flower center.

5. Cut a strip of crepe paper in a slightly different color, about 2 × 20 cm. Cut a tight fringe along one edge. Roll the strip so the fringe forms the flower’s stamens. Glue the base of the roll to the center of the flower.

Crepe paper flowers hold up well amid all the party excitement, and the layers make for eye-catching decorations.

6. Glue the flowers onto your Polaroid-shaped cardboard as in our example. You can also make leaves from green crepe paper or use ready-made artificial leaves.

Turning a picture frame into a photo frame

Materials:

  • Old picture frames
  • Gold spray paint
  • Wire
  • Lace ribbon
  • Flowers

Instructions:

Materials for customizing the photo frame.
An old frame transforms into something fresh and glamorous with spray paint, flowers, and lace.

1. Spray paint an old, profile molding picture frame. If needed, give it a light sanding and wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

Picture frames hung from a tree branch serve as photo frames at a party.
Use your backyard trees to hold up the photo frames.

2. Hang the frame at the photo spot using lace ribbons. You can also tie lace bows for extra decoration. Remember that people of different heights want to join the pictures, so prepare at least two frames at different levels.

Hide a small water container for delicate blooms beneath bows and other decorations.

3. Gather small bouquets of seasonal flowers and attach them to the frame with wire. They’ll stay fresh all day if you place them in water, such as in lightweight florist tubes.
