Pet bed—materials:

  • 2 meters of fabric
  • Scissors and a sewing machine
  • Stuffing
  • 3 meters of string

How to make the pet bed

1. Fold the fabric in half and cut out a circle to get two identical pieces.

Fabric cut into a circle for the pet bed
Consider using an old sheet or curtain for the fabric, and recycle old pillow fillings for stuffing.

2. Pin the circular pieces together with right sides facing inward. Sew around the outer edges, leaving about a 12-centimeter opening unstitched.

3. Turn the fabric right side out. Sew a casing that fits your chosen string, again leaving a 12-centimeter opening.

Our instructions can be applied to make pet beds of all sizes. Adjust the amount of materials and the measurements of the circle according to your pet’s size.

4. Draw a circle in the middle of the fabric (about 20–22 cm from the edge) and sew along it, leaving a 12-centimeter opening for stuffing.

5. Fill the resulting cavities with stuffing and finish sewing the seams. Cut openings in the casing and finish up their edges, then thread the string through.

Pet bed fillings
Old pillow fillings work great as stuffing for your pet bed.

6. With the string, adjust the bed into your desired shape—a snug nest or a roomy mattress.

The casing of this nest is 3 centimeters wide, but you can adjust it according to the size of your bed. Use a ready-made string or sew one from fabric yourself. Leave an opening for the string and hide the knot inside the casing if you like.
Dog in its own bed
The bed in the picture has a diameter of 90 centimeters, and the dog weighs 4–5 kilograms. “Our dogs immediately took a liking to their nest. There was quite a hustle at our house when we were photographing the bed,” says Maria Meder.
