Abbreviations:

  • k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
  • m1r = right-leaning increase. Lift the strand between stitches by inserting the left needle from behind, then knit or purl through the front loop.
  • m1l = left-leaning increase. Lift the strand between stitches by inserting the left needle from the front, then knit or purl through the back loop.
  • p = purl
  • k = knit
  • ssk = slip, slip, knit. Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip 1 stitch as if to knit, place them back on the left needle, and knit them together through the back loops.
Merino yarn doesn’t itch and is lovely to knit with. One skein is enough for a small scarf, and you’ll need a bit more for the larger one.

Small scarf in pearl stitch—instructions:

This small scarf is knit flat, repeating a simple pearl stitch.

Cast on 6 stitches on 4 mm (US 6) needles. Knit 2 rows and then begin the increase rows:

Row 1: k2, *k1, p1*, repeat *—* until 2 stitches remain, k2.

Row 2: k2, *p1, k1*, repeat *—* until 2 stitches remain, k2.

Repeat Rows 1–3 until there are 20 (40) stitches. Place a stitch marker on the edge of your work, then continue Rows 1–2 until the piece measures 20 cm (about 8 in) from the marker.

Then begin the decreases:

Row 1: k2, ssk, *k1, p1*, repeat *—* until 4 stitches remain, k2tog, k2.

Row 2: k2, *k1, p1*, repeat *—* until 2 stitches remain, k2.

Repeat Rows 2–3 another 2 times.

Repeat Rows 1–3 until you have 6 stitches left and have finished on Row 3. Finally, knit 2 rows and bind off.
