The peace lily is a popular and easy-to-care-for houseplant. It produces flowers with a white spathe and a yellowish-white spadix.

Common peace lily varieties available are Spathiphyllum floribundum and varieties of the S. Floribundum group. A wide range of varieties of different sizes have been bred for use as houseplants. Spathiphyllum floribundum grows to about 30–45 centimeters tall, while some varieties in the S. Floribundum group, such as ‘Clevelandii’ and ‘Mauna Loa’, can grow over half a meter tall.

The peace lily can manage in fairly low light, but in such conditions it may not flower. Peace lilies are effective at clearing indoor air.

Care for peace lily—tips for success

Ideal growing medium for peace lily

Plant your peace lily in regular potting soil meant for houseplants. Peace lilies thrive in self-watering pots as well as regular ones; if you choose a self-watering pot, be sure to use potting mix designed for it.

Ideal spot for your peace lily

The peace lily thrives near a bright window but doesn’t tolerate direct sunlight. It can also tolerate shade, but may not flower in low-light conditions.

Ideal temperature

Native to South and Central America, the peace lily thrives at normal room temperatures year-round. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius.

How to water your peace lily

Water your peace lily regularly throughout the year. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid letting it dry out completely, as this can cause the leaf tips to brown. Regular misting helps keep your peace lily healthy.

Fertilizing your peace lily

Feed your peace lily with a mild fertilizer mixed with water every couple of weeks from spring to autumn.

How to repot your peace lily

When your peace lily outgrows its container, repot it into a container that is a couple centimeters larger than the current one.

How to propagate your peace lily

The peace lily can be propagated by division.
