Cute creation for the kids' room: Turn an old cabinet into a pastel play nook
A children’s room cabinet became a pastel-colored shop fitted with an awning and painted with two different colors. Blogger Katja Rinkinen transforms attic eyesores into dreamy furnishings.
A market stall from an old cabinet—supplies:
- cabinet
- sandpaper
- wood filler
- a drill and wood drill bits
- wood knobs and masking tape
- furniture paint in two different shades
- 2 paint brushes
- a suitably long wooden round rod (15 mm, 0.6″) and a saw
- 4 small eye bolts
- some fabric, a sewing machine, and thread
- 6 Torx (star) screws with countersunk heads

A worn-out piece of furniture—even the drawers—come back to life with paint.
From an old cabinet to a market stall—instructions:
- Remove any peeling paint from the cabinet. Fill holes with wood filler. Sand the filled areas.
- Drill holes for the wooden knobs, then attach them with wood glue. Protect the knobs with masking tape before painting.
- Apply two coats of paint to the cabinet, using two different shades.
- Cut the round rod into 4 pieces for the awning. The center rod must be the width of the cabinet plus 0.5 cm (0.2″) for attaching.
- Paint the rods separately in the same shade as the cabinet’s interior. Attach eye screws to both ends of the vertical support rods.
- Sew the fabric. The finished awning is 50 cm (20″) deep, plus about 10 cm (4″) for the hem. Neaten the fabric edges. Make two wide casings for the rods. Insert one rod into each casing.
- Secure the top rod of the awning to the top of the cabinet with screws. Drill holes for the screws through the sides of the cabinet. Screw the vertical rods in place through eye screws at the bottom of the cabinet. See the photo for reference. Attach the center rod with screws through the vertical rods’ eye screws.
