A bold makeover
Switch up your nightstand: paint your way to a fresh new look
Painting a nightstand gives an old piece of furniture a fresh look. Bold green nightstands transport your thoughts to a vacation destination. A surprise awaits inside the cabinet when you paint it in another color.
Nightstand painting—materials:
a single nightstand or a pair of nightstands
0.125 liters of Ottosson linseed oil paint (about 0.13 qt), in bright green and black
semi-matte furniture paint
a brush and an abrasive pad
for tinting, green watercolor pigment and pearlescent pigment
a heat gun or an infrared paint remover
a paint scraper
wood filler and a putty knife
sandpaper and a sander, grit 80 and 180
porcelain knobs.

How to paint a nightstand
- Remove all flaking and loose paint. Use wood filler to patch any holes. Sand the furniture once the filler is dry.
- Mix a dark green shade from the two linseed oil paints. Paint the surface 2–3 times. Allow about three days of drying between coats. Lightly sand the surface with an abrasive pad between coats.
- Create a light mint-green shade by mixing the semi-matte color and the green watercolor pigment for the inside of the cabinet. A little pearlescent tint was included in the nightstands’ color for extra brightness. Paint the cabinet interior twice, letting each coat dry before the next.
- Finally, attach the porcelain knobs.
