10 stunning old house kitchens: recycle, preserve, or modernize with style!

There are many ways to renovate old house kitchens. Embrace the spirit of the era in your choices, boldly introduce new and modern elements, or assemble a unique recycled solution where anything is possible.

1. Heart of the home

Built in two phases during the late 19th century and the 1920s, this Ostrobothnian house has a kitchen transformed into the inviting heart of the home. The doors of the Ikea kitchen cabinets were hand-painted in a style-appropriate light gray, with all the painting done by hand. The tiled backsplash beautifully unifies the kitchen.

2. Modernizing an old house kitchen

In this old house kitchen, the original 1950s cabinets, which were too low for today’s standards, have been raised to a more ergonomic working height. A dishwasher was integrated next to them, and additional storage was added with an Ikea drawer unit. The cabinets were unified in appearance with bar handles from Domus Classica and by painting them in Uula’s shade Olive.

3. Unapologetically modern

The modern kitchen in this 1939-built house stands out as a distinctly new ensemble. The moderate size and height of the cabinets, along with paneling made from floorboards, fit beautifully into the spacious area. The impressive ceiling beams bring a sense of historical layering to the space.

4. Splash of color

In this renovated old house kitchen, there is a clear distinction between the new and the old in the main room of this protected 1895-built house. The kitchen cabinets, bought from Keittiömaailma, keep the space airy. The oven and microwave are at an ergonomically optimal height. The handmade rose-colored concrete countertops complete the color scheme of the cabinets. Installing glass or plexiglass above the sink subtly protects the log wall. The spacious island effortlessly divides and defines the different purposes of the area into distinct zones.

5. Boldly rustic

The kitchen cabinets in this old house kitchen, originally purchased second-hand, have been painted to better suit the house built in 1805. Paint is an easy and affordable way to refresh worn-out cabinets, and there’s no rule against playful color choices. The countertops are made of robust live-edge planks, with the sink recessed into the countertop. The beadboard paneling in the backsplash complements both the cabinets and the overall ambience.

6. Pantry always works

The ever-relevant and highly practical pantry, along with the kitchen cabinets, are custom-made based on personal designs. The frame is made of laminated wood and the doors from beadboard appropriate for the house built in the 1800s. The workspace has been optimized by making the countertop deeper than usual.

7. Airiness with a display cabinet

The display cabinet, which has made a comeback in kitchen trends, suits this atmospheric 1895-built old house kitchen. It allows you to showcase your most beautiful dishes while keeping them safe from dust. Additionally, the glass-doored upper section lightens the cabinetry and makes the space feel more airy. This display cabinet by Epoq-keittiöt provides versatile drawer space and has a slightly country-romantic style.

8. Adaptable to a Finnish wooden house

In the kitchen of this Finnish wooden house, built in 1955, the original masonry is coated with resin. The wood and electric stoves, as well as the shelving niches, now have their own spots; the owners also built a countertop that extends around the corner. The softly toned cabinets are from Avance. To achieve a natural result, the final coat of paint on the cabinets was applied by hand. The tongue-and-groove paneling, typical of Finnish wooden houses, integrates the kitchen seamlessly into the era and architecture of the house.

9. Beautifully recycled

Your old house kitchen doesn’t have to be expensive. In this unique kitchen, only the backsplash tiles are new. The storage cabinet was bought secondhand at a bicycle repair shop. The sink and faucet came from the storage of a plumber. The beautifully patinated open shelf is made of a plank found on a beach. After it was sanded, it became the piece that completed the kitchen cabinetry.

10. Modern and old in harmony

The minimalist style of the Puustelli kitchen cabinets is timeless. It’s a neutral choice that suits this house built in 1931. Old furniture, such as the Rococo-inspired china cabinet, fits naturally alongside the minimalist cabinetry. The mirrors on the walls add a villa-like charm to the kitchen.
