Firestarter roses and teacup candles—here’s what you’ll need:

  • leftover candle pieces
  • candle dye
  • wick string
  • wick attachments from used tealights
  • old coffee cups
  • egg cartons
  • pine cones
  • pliers
  • an old pot.
You can also make firestarters from pine cones by dipping them into melted wax and adding a wax-soaked wick.

How to make firestarter roses from egg cartons

  1. Tear off the cup portion of the egg carton to form the base of the rose.
  2. Pull off strips from the carton, then twist them to create the rose’s center.
  3. You can color the melted wax with candle dye.
  4. Use pliers to dip the rose in the melted wax. Let it set on a surface, then dip it again. Repeat a few times.

How to make teacup candles

  1. Remove the wick attachment from a used tealight by prying it open with a nail or similar tool.
  2. Insert a new wick and press it firmly in place with pliers. Secure the other end of the wick to a stick.
  3. Lay the stick across the middle of the cup so the wick hangs straight down to the bottom.
  4. Melt the leftover pieces in a pot and remove any old wicks.
  5. Pour the melted wax into the cup. If the wax contracts and forms a dent as it cools, add more wax.
