Craft a hanging chair—all you need is rope, a seat cushion, and a bit of dexterity!
It’s surprisingly easy to make your own hanging chair, even if you’re a beginner. With these illustrated step-by-step instructions, you’re sure to succeed!
Hanging chair—supplies:
- About 200 meters of natural rope
- A rod
- Scissors and a measuring tape
- A floor or seat cushion
Hanging chair—instructions:

1. Cut 22 pieces of rope from the spool, each 9 meters long. Hang them from the midpoint over a bar or rod set up overhead. Separate the ropes into two groups, leaving a clear gap between them.

2. Tie a knot in each pair of ropes 80 cm below the rod. Try to keep all knots at the same height. Tie the other group of ropes in the same way.

3. On the next row, leave the outermost rope hanging freely, and tie one rope from each adjacent pair together. The ropes will start forming a diamond-shaped net.

4. Continue tying the net row by row. You can vary your knot spacing, for example, by placing them closer together near the top and further apart as you go down.

5. Tie the other half of the net the same way. In the finished seat, the two halves of the net will be spread apart, so it’s all right if the knots are at slightly different heights.

6. Once you’re down to under a meter of rope, tie the ends together. Gather the rope loops at the top into a hanging rope and hook the net onto a ceiling joist. Place a cushion inside the net as your seat.
