Loop-stitch cushion—pattern:
Construction
The cushion is worked flat from the bottom edge up in loop-stitch colorwork crochet. Use a separate strand of yarn for each contrast-color section, as in intarsia crochet. On loop-stitch rows, carry the main color behind the contrast colors—you’ll work it inside the sc on the following row. On sc rows, when working on the CC sections, work the main color as well as the float from the previous row inside the stitches. The back of the cushion is worked entirely in dc.
Front
With MC, ch 73. Work 3 rows of sc. Begin colorwork following the chart.
*Row 1: work sc; change colors as indicated on the chart. Row 2: work loop stitches; change colors as indicated on the chart. To start and end each loop-stitch row, work 3 hdc.* Repeat from * to * until you have completed all the rows on the chart. Work 2 more rows of sc.

Back
Continue where the front piece ended and, with CC3, work rows of dc until the back piece is the same length as the front.
Finishing
Weave in all ends and steam-block gently from the wrong side. Sew the sides together. If you wish, sew a zipper into the bottom edge as an opening for the insert, or simply crochet the opening closed after stuffing. A single row of crochet is easy to undo and redo if you decide to change the cushion insert. To freshen the wool, airing in subzero weather is often enough, and the tencel fibers have antibacterial properties.
