Lingonberry wool socks: a cozy autumn design featuring lingonberry, heather, and lichen
The Lingonberry wool socks are the perfect choice for autumn. This lovely sock pattern was designed by Finnish knitting designer Sisko Malinen. The motif can also easily be adapted for mittens.
Size: EU 39.
Lingonberry wool socks: supplies
- Novita 7 Brothers yarn in white (011), nettle (366), Christmas (549), berry porridge (053), and lichen (047)
- Needles 3.5 mm (US 4) or according to your gauge.

Gauge
21 sts = 10 cm, 24 rows = 10 cm.
How to knit the Lingonberry wool socks
Cast on 64 sts with berry porridge and divide them onto four needles, 16 sts on each.
Work the ribbing like this:
Round 1: k2, p2.
Round 2: yo, k2tog, p2.
Round 3: k2, p2.
Round 4: k2tog, yo, p2.
Repeat these four rounds until the ribbing measures about 7 cm. Then knit 2 rounds in stockinette with berry porridge.

Begin the colorwork and work Chart 1.
Knit 1 round with berry porridge, then repeat the ribbing rows until the ribbing measures about 4 cm. Then knit another round with berry porridge.
Work Chart 2.
Distribute the stitches evenly so each needle has 12 sts.
Heel and foot
The heel and foot are knitted with nettle. Work the heel flap back and forth in reinforced stitch on needles 1 and 4 (24 sts total).
Wrong side: slip 1 purlwise, purl the rest, turn.
Right side: *slip 1 purlwise, k1*, repeat *–* to the end of the row. Repeat these two rows until you have 24 rows for the heel flap.
Heel turn decreases
Continue in reinforced stitch. Knit 15 sts from the right edge. Make an skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, k1 and pass slipped st over knit st). Turn work. Slip the first st purlwise, p6, then p2tog. Turn and continue in the same manner so that the side sts continue to decrease. Work until there are no side stitches left. You will have 8 sts remaining: 4 sts on needle 1 and 4 sts on needle 4.
Pick up 12 sts from the edge of the heel flap onto needle 1, plus 1 st between needles 1 and 2. Do the same on needle 4, picking up 12 sts plus 1 st between needles 3 and 4.

Gusset decreases
Knit the last two sts of needle 1 together and skp at the start of needle 4 on every round until there are 48 sts in total.
Knit the foot to your desired length and begin the toe decreases.
K2tog at the end of needles 1 and 3, and skp at the beginning of needles 2 and 4. Decrease on every other round until you have 7 sts on each needle. Then decrease on every round until you have 8 sts total left. Break the yarn, pull it through the remaining sts, and weave in the ends.
Tip!
You can save Sisko’s chart and use the same lingonberry motif for mittens, too.
