Light it up literally
Craft the coveted light-up letter: easy DIY guide
A personalized light-up letter adds a beautiful glow to a bedroom or a child’s room. You can craft any size you want from corrugated cardboard and LED lights. Choose the letter based on the recipient’s first name!
Light-up letter—supplies:
- corrugated cardboard (a cardboard box works well for this)
- round LED lights
- glue
- sharp scissors
- a large sheet of paper

Light-up letter—instructions:
- Draw the desired letter shape on a sheet of paper, using a ruler. Then cut it out to use as a template.
- Cut the letter from cardboard using your template.
- Cut straight strips approximately 8 centimeters (3) wide that fit the letter’s dimensions.
- Wrap the letter’s perimeter with the strips you cut. You can use a single strip to form the sides or piece them together from smaller sections. In the corners, start a new strip to keep them clean.
- Spread glue about one centimeter (0.5) away from the edges of the side pieces. Glue the strips to the edge of the base letter with butt joints. Make sure they fit snugly. The base letter will sit slightly deeper than the side edges.
- If the seams between the side pieces bother you, cover the entire letter with decorative paper or paint to hide them.
- Plan where you want the lights to go and mark each spot with a pencil.
- Make x-shaped cuts at each mark and gently push the LED bulbs through.
