Make an enchanting light canopy from an old hula hoop—step-by-step tutorial
A lush light canopy is the crowning touch in any party hall. Hang it above the wedding couple’s table or use it to illuminate the dance floor. You won’t even recognize the old hula hoop under all those decorations!
Light canopy from a hula hoop—supplies:
- Hula hoop
- Burlap
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Jute twine, thick and thin
- String lights
- Silk ribbons
- Leafy branches (white willow used in this example)

Light canopy from a hula hoop—instructions:

1. Cut the burlap into strips about 6–7 cm wide. Use hot glue to attach one end of a strip to the hoop, then wrap it around until the entire hoop is covered. You can also spray paint the hoop, but that makes its surface hard and slippery, making attaching branches more difficult.

2. Tie long silk ribbons around the hoop at even intervals. You can use one color or several. In the sample project, 50–90 cm recycled ribbons were used and ironed flat.
3. Wrap the string lights around the hoop. If there’s no electrical outlet nearby, use battery-operated string lights.

4. Tie branches onto the hoop. Make small bundles of greenery and secure them with thin jute twine.
5. Use thicker jute twine or silk ribbon to hang the canopy. Secure it at three equally spaced points around the hoop, then gather them in the center. Make sure the strings are long enough to hang the decoration at your desired height.
