Crochet a large basket that stands up to everyday life—see the pattern!
This generously sized basket keeps its shape, thanks to the metal ring crocheted onto its edge. The round plywood base provides stability, and the handles make it easy to move. Perfect for storing yarn and other craft supplies!
Size: 30 × 40 × 22 cm (12" × 16" × 9") (base × top × height).
Large crocheted basket—materials:
- 900 g of Lankava Lilli tube yarn (80% recycled cotton, 20% polyester, 1 kg ≈ 220 m) in dark green (11) or terracotta (36)
- crochet hook 4 mm and 7 mm or size needed to obtain gauge
- 30 cm (12") plywood basket base (69 holes), 40 cm (16") metal ring, two 40 cm (16") leather straps in natural color (width 22 mm), four double-cap rivets (7–9 mm in diameter, 6–7 mm high), and a hammer.
Gauge: 8 sc and 7.5 rnds = 10 cm (4").
Abbreviations:
- rnd: round
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- sl st: slip stitch

Large crocheted basket—pattern:
First, edge the plywood base with the smaller hook as follows: Insert the hook through a hole, yarn over and pull it through, yarn over again and draw it through the loop on the hook. Continue by making 1 sc in each hole, working the yarn tail inside the stitches as you go. Close each rnd with 1 sl st into the first stitch. Note: The sl st does not count as a stitch—do not work a stitch into it.
Switch to the larger hook and start working the basket:
- Rnd 1: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 67 sc, 1 sl st in the first ch = 68 sts. Close all rnds in the same way.
- Rnd 2: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 9 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 10 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 11 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 10 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 11 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 1 sl st = 74 sts.
- Rnd 3: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 73 sc, 1 sl st.
- Rnd 4: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 4 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 11 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 12 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 11 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 7 sc, 1 sl st = 80 sts.
- Rnds 5–6: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 79 sc, 1 sl st.
- Rnd 7: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 11 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 12 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 13 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 12 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 13 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 1 sl st = 86 sts.
- Rnds 8–9: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 85 sc, 1 sl st.
- Rnd 10: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 5 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 13 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 14 sc, repeat from * to * two times, 2 sc in the same st, 8 sc, 1 sl st = 92 sts.
- Rnds 11–12: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 91 sc, 1 sl st.
- Rnd 13: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 13 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 14 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 15 sc, *2 sc in the same st, 14 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 2 sc in the same st, 15 sc, 2 sc in the same st, 1 sl st = 98 sts.
- Rnd 14: Ch 1 + 1 sc in the same st, 97 sc, 1 sl st. On the next rnd, work the metal ring into the stitches and create openings for the handles.
- Rnd 15: Ch 1, place the metal ring behind the stitch under the yarn, work 1 sc in the same st (together with the ch) and around the metal ring, then continue as follows: 1 sc, *2 sc around the metal ring only, skip 2 sts, 9 sc, 2 sc around the ring, skip 2 sts, 35 sc*, repeat from * to * once more, 1 sl st.
- Rnd 16: Work 1 sl st in the back loop of each st, cut the yarn, and finish by working an invisible fasten-off. Weave in the end with the smaller hook.
Handles
Mark the rivet positions on both ends of the straps: the first 1 cm from the end of the strap, and the second 7.5 cm from that point. Punch the holes. Thread the strap ends through the openings in the basket edge and fold the ends up. Align the holes, insert the rivets from opposite directions, snap them together, and hammer them into place.
