Banana sock craze

Knitters around the world are going bananas for Kotona’s socks: “I’d never seen socks like that”

What’s yellow, curved, and missing a tricky heel? A banana sock, of course! This playful sock pattern featured on the Kotona website is gaining popularity among knitters worldwide. “These socks are different, just like me, and that’s why I love them,” says Carrsha from the United States.

“Oh wow, these are so, so, so cool.” “This is genius!” “Oh how clever! I like that you can use this for a gift without knowing sizing!”

When California-based Anna, 30, showed off the banana socks she knitted on TikTok, her video was flooded with delighted comments. Anna was instantly excited about banana socks after spotting the idea on Pinterest, then found Kotona’s banana sock pattern through a Google search.

“I’d never seen socks like that, so I knew I needed to knit them,” Anna says.

Banana socks’ distinctive feature is that they have no heel at all, making them really easy to knit. Even without a heel, they fit any foot comfortably thanks to their stretch. The idea of a sock without a heel was what really excited Anna.

“The banana sock pattern was very fun and super easy to follow! I was really intrigued by the concept of a sock with no heel. I don’t like to purl, but this pattern made it fun.”

“I would recommend this pattern to beginners because the pattern was very clear, but also to experienced knitters who want to try something new,” Anna says. Anna knits almost every day and shares her knitting ideas on TikTok under @annacraftyknits. Lately, she’s been especially inspired by colorwork mittens and socks.

Baltimore-based Carrsha Reed, 30, was also inspired to knit our banana socks. She saw Anna’s post and was immediately excited to make them.

“I’ve only been knitting since May, and these are the first pair of socks I’ve successfully completed. These socks are different, just like me, and that’s why I love them. The knitting experience was a dream.”

Carrsha says she finished the banana socks very quickly because the pattern was easy to follow. She slightly modified the pattern so she could use 23 cm (9 in.) circular needles. “I knit and crochet every day, and all types of patterns inspire me, but right now I’m loving textured knits.” She shows off her handiwork on TikTok under @thousandships.

Kotona’s banana sock pattern was designed by our crafts producer Annette Saksman in 2023. Different heel-less banana sock patterns were circulating on social media in various languages, so Annette was inspired to create her own version. The original inventor remains unknown.

Our pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches both vertically and horizontally. The back of the sock is ribbed. Even though there’s no separate heel, these socks are just as comfortable as traditional wool socks. They’re not recommended for boots, but they’re perfect as house socks or bed socks.
