Knitted hood pattern: how to knit this trendy, soft, and fluffy accessory

This knitted hood is worked from the bottom edge up, starting in the round and then continuing flat. A cord around the face forms a drawstring to adjust the hood’s opening. The practical design allows you to pull the hood down from your head to your neck with ease.

  • 40 cm circular needle and double-pointed needles, both in size 4.5 mm (US 7)
  • Stitch marker

Gauge: 22 sts and 30 rows = 10 cm.

Abbreviations:

  • k: knit, knit stitch
  • k2tog: knit 2 stitches together (right-leaning decrease, 1 st decreased)
  • p: purl, purl stitch
  • rnd: round
  • RS: right side of the work
  • s, sts: stitch, stitches
  • skp: skp decrease; slip 1 knitwise, knit 1 and pass the slipped st over
  • WS: wrong side of the work

Instructions for the Untuva knitted hood:

Knit the hood from the bottom edge up. Cast on 120 sts. Place a marker at the beginning of the round and move it as you work. Work stockinette stitch in the round (knit all sts) for 63 rounds. Then begin the neckline opening:

  • 1st row: Knit 44, bind off 32 sts, knit 44.
  • 2nd row: Knit 44, turn. Continue stockinette stitch flat from here on.
  • 3rd row (WS): Slip 1 st, purl 87, turn.
  • 4th row (RS): Slip 1 st, knit 87, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for 20 more times = 42 rows. Then work the top edge of the neckline on the next row.

45th row: Knit 44, cast on 32 sts, knit 44 = 120 sts.

Work 12 more rounds in stockinette stitch in the round. Then begin the top-of-the-head decreases:

  • 1st rnd: *k2tog, knit 13*, repeat *–* to the end of the rnd = 112 sts.
  • 2nd rnd: Knit 112.
  • 3rd round: *k2tog, knit 12*, repeat *–* to the end of the rnd = 104 sts.
  • 4th rnd: Knit 104.

Continue decreasing in the same manner every other round, then pull the yarn through the last 8 sts.

Neckline

Make a cord casing along the neckline: Using a circular needle, pick up and knit 32 sts from the bottom edge of the neckline, 22 sts along one side, 32 sts across the top edge, and 22 sts along the other side = 108 sts total. Work 5 rows in stockinette stitch. Then make the cord openings in the casing as follows: knit 3, *k2tog, cast on 2 sts, skp, knit 18*, repeat *–* and knit to the end of the row. Work 17 more rows in stockinette stitch and bind off with a stretchy bind-off.

Cord

Cast on 4 sts. Knit 4, *move the sts to the beginning of the needle and knit 4*, repeat *–*. Note: always snug the yarn at the beginning of each row so no extra yarn is left between the sts. When the cord measures 80 cm, break the yarn and pull it through the sts.

Finishing

Weave in the ends. Fold the cord casing to the wrong side and stitch its starting and ending edges together with a stretchy seam. Thread the cord through the casing with a safety pin.
