Mittens like jewelry

This winter’s sweetest mittens are decorated with spruce sprigs, hearts, and snow crystals

The two-colored Jewelry mittens truly live up to their name. The back of the hand features spruce sprig and heart motifs, while the palm is covered with snow crystals. Knit them in your or your giftee’s favorite shades!

Size: One size (for women/teens).

Jewelry mittens: supplies

  • Novita Venla yarn, slightly under 50 g of green (372) and slightly under 50 g of pale pink (505)
  • 2.5 mm (US 1.5) double-pointed needles, or size needed to meet gauge.

Stitch patterns

  • Ribbing in the round: *k2, p2*, repeat *–*.
  • Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all sts every round.
  • Stranded colorwork in the round: work stockinette stitch according to the chart.Note!Anchor floats longer than 5 sts on the wrong side by twisting the yarns around each other. Vary these twist points so they don’t stack in the same place on consecutive rounds.

Gauge: 32 sts in stranded colorwork = 10 cm.

Jewelry colorwork mittens
Try experimenting with different color palettes. The look changes completely if you knit the mittens in black and white.

How to knit the Jewelry mittens

Left-hand mitten

  1. Cast on 64 sts with green onto double-pointed needles. Divide the sts onto four needles, 16 sts per needle. The start of the round is between needles I and IV, on the outer edge of the hand. Work 6 cm of ribbing in the round.
  2. Knit 1 round in green and at the same time decrease 1 st at the end of needle IV = 63 sts.
  3. Begin stranded colorwork in the round from row 1 of Chart I and work the 63-st pattern. Work rows 1–6.
  4. On row 7, increase 1 st at the end of needle IV = 64 sts. Then work rows 8–9.
  5. Continue with the stranded colorwork. On row 10, start the thumb gusset. The thumb gusset’s starting point is marked with a red square in the chart (= row 1 of the thumb gusset). On needles I and II, knit until you reach the marked st. Knit the marked st three times: first knit it through the front loop, then the back loop, and once more through the front loop. Knit to end of round.
  6. Continue in stranded colorwork and follow Chart II for the thumb gusset. Work rows 1–27 of the gusset. On the next round, knit to the start of the gusset and place the 21 gusset sts on hold on scrap yarn or a safety pin. Cast on 1 st in their place, then finish the round.
  7. After the thumb gusset, continue with the stranded colorwork until you have finished row 61. Keep following the pattern and begin the tip decreases: at the beginning of needles I and III, k1 in green, then make a skp decrease (= slip 1 knitwise, k1 and pass slipped st over knit st). At the end of needles II and IV, knit 2 sts together in green, then k1. Make these decreases every other round until you have completed row 72 of the chart. Continue working the rest of the mitten in green and repeat the decreases on every round until 12 sts remain. Cut the yarn, pull it through the remaining sts, tighten, and weave in the ends.

Right-hand mitten

  1. Knit the right-hand mitten as a mirror image of the left-hand mitten. On needles I and II, work the back-of-hand pattern in Chart I (the pattern intended for needles III and IV), and on needles III and IV, work the palm pattern in Chart I (the pattern for needles I and II). The thumb goes at the beginning of needle III.
Chart II.

Thumb

  1. Move the 21 sts you placed on hold onto your needles, then pick up 5 more sts at the thumb base to prevent a gap from forming. You now have 26 sts. Distribute them over three needles.
  2. Begin the stranded colorwork from row 28 of Chart II, making sure the pattern flows correctly. On the first round, decrease 2 sts where you picked up sts. You now have 8 sts on each needle. Work rows 29–41. Then finish the thumb in green.
  3. Work in stockinette and shape the tip: at the end of each needle, knit 2 sts together until 9 sts remain. Then k1, slip it back to the left needle, and pass the remaining sts over it from left to right.

Finishing

Lightly steam the finished mittens.
